Whether fleshing out his sound with a full band or flying solo, like he does on this record, there is no question the man's work is ace. Books/Mags $8 SKU:7998 SHINDIG!- Issue 4 May-June 2008- Label: In our May-June issue, Shindig! Magazine has persuaded Andy Partridge and Dave Gregory to talk about their heartfelt love of British psychedelia and why XTC developed the alter-ego THE DUKES OF THE STRATOSPHEAR in the mid-80s. Both Andy and Dave grew up in the late '60s and were enthralled by the psychedelic records that they heard on the radio as teenagers. You could say that eccentric British spirit was ingrained in them at an early age. As writer Marco Rossi notes in this issue's cover story "XTC always had something psychedelic about them, even on their earliest punk sides".The massive impact that British psychedelia is still having on contemporary music is exemplified by the re-imagined Peppersesque spectacle of new bands such as PANIC AT THE DISCO. With the imminent reissues of the two DUKES OF THE STRATOSPHEAR albums, this is going to be the perfect sunny summer for drinking Pimms and eating cucumber sandwiches on the lawn. Remember, Andy Partridge does not do interviews... but he did for Shindig! Includes an article on the BOMP book!! Books/Mags $11 SKU:8097 126- Graveyard Paradise - Label:UGLY THINGS Hailing from the coldest, northernmost region of Norway, 1 2 6 (One-Two-Six) were inspired by the sounds of the Beatles, the Kinks, the Who and Bob Dylan, but blended these influences with an approach that was distinctly European. The brilliant original songwriting of Asa Krogtoft allied simple beat group arrangements and melodic psychedelic pop with a unique, often surrealistic poetic sensibility. This 28-track CD anthology includes their complete works: the Curtains Falling album, non-LP singles, demos and rarities, and both singles by Asa's post-1 2 6 band Taboo, all from the original master tapes. Graveyard Paradise is the first time this material has been released outside of Norway. It includes an amazing array of original music: raw beat group rave-ups, dark folk-rock excursions, post-Revolver/Pepper psychedelic moves, gorgeous orchestrated pop, and heavier freakbeat sounds. The deluxe 16-page CD booklet is loaded with rare pix and full liner notes. CD $14 SKU:8098 ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO- OMINOUS FROM THE COSMIC INFERNO CD W/ MINI LP GATEFOLD PACKAGING -Label:ESSENCE MUSIC A super wild, punishingly dark slab of experimental psychedelic hell where fuzz blasted, ultra riffing and hypnotic speed guru guitar chaos - courtesy of Mr. Kawabata Makoto - meet early Amon Düül-influenced druggy, acoustic, mantric folk experimentalisms and eastern drones from below. The scent of sulphur fills the air and brings on the Japanese psychedelic inferno! Presented in Essence's deluxe, sturdy gatefold mini-LP packaging featuring cosmic artwork by Jason Killinger and including a striking pop-up! CD $26 SKU:7667 ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING POT - 41ST CENTURY SPLENDID MAN RETURNS CD W/ LP GATEFOLD PACKAGING -Label:ESSENCE MUSIC Motorik krautrock rhythms work side by side with interstellar signals, ghostly female voices and analog synths. Bursts of damaged psych brilliance and free guitars open and seal the album, healing the aural wounds for/from the mammoth droney, mysterious and transcendental ambient experience of the title track, built with the aid of a non traditional array of instruments, like sarangi, sitar, zurna and tibetan trumpet. Definately not of this world. Originally released as an extremely limited 12" picture vinyl on Tumult Records, this extended CD edition features two extra tracks, new artwork - including a stunning psychedelic painting by Jason Killinger - and comes in Essence's deluxe, custom old school miniature LP gatefold packaging. CD $28 SKU:7666 ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE PINK LADIES- THE SOUL OF A MOUNTAIN WOLF -Label:FRACTAL New 2nd album by the japanese AMT trio, an outfit led by Magic Aum GiGi - alias Jerome Genin, Fractal owner for the fake secret. THE SOUL OF A MOUNTAIN WOLF is a concept album, short and definitely ROCK dominated by wild fuzz psychedelic guitar. CD $21 SKU:8063 ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE PINK LADIES BLUES- FEATURING THE SUN LOVE AND HEAVY -Label:FRACTAL ...METAL THUNDER). WARNING : Acid Mothers Temple & The Pink Ladies Blues is a different group than the well-known Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO and Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno. This new Japanese band was created in April 2005 by Magic Aum Gigi (ex-Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO). His main works with the "Melting Paraiso UFO" can be found on the album "AbsolutelyFreak-Out" (2001), the compilation "Do whatever you want, don't do whatever you don't want!!" (2002), and has released his own solo album "MMMM - My Metal Machine Music" (2004). Acid Mothers Temple & The Pink Ladies Blues is an underground punk blues trio composed by two guitarists (Tsuchy, Magic Aum Gigi) with one drum (Mai Mai). Their first album : "Acid Mothers Temple & The Pink Ladies Blues featuring the Sun Love and the Heavy Metal Thunder" is a deep raw trip and a wild transgression of the mother nature filtered by the occult powers! This love potion is made by thunder guitars, power drums, plus various electronics and acoustics sounds, and vocals. If reviewers have often compared the sound of Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO closed to Amon Duul 2, so, Acid Mothers Temple & The Pink Ladies Blues sounds close to Amon Duul 1. A surprising and an impressive first recording in this beginning of new century that you should hear to believe it! CD $25 SKU:8062 AHMED, ILYAS - THE VERTIGO OF DAWN -Label:TIME-LAG Much anticipated first proper release after a string of ear tugging & increasingly impressive private press CDRs. A real shinning spirit in these somewhat goofy times of "folkpsych" abuse, this guy nails it like its in his DNA. Way beyond a simple formula, this is a complete tonal voyage. Opening the album with a dark ritual of dueling reeds and buzzing drones, things than erupt into some seriously burning psych raga excursion built from totally heavy, jamming, acoustic guitar licks, eastern grooving hand percussions, stoned backwards or fuzzed-out electric guitar splatters, and subtle creaky drones. The vocals are nearly unintelligible but swirl beautifully through most songs like floating smokey ripples. Woozy, headbobbing, and completely THERE. Yow...packaged in a matching fabric textured, golden hued, mini LP style gatefold cover with black & blood red printing, plus insert & woven Japanese inner sleeve. CD $19 SKU:8024 BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES -- A Touch Of Someone Else's Class - Label:ALIVE Black Diamond Heavies is a self-described punk-ass blues duo from the South consisting of John Wesley Myers on bass keys, fender Rhodes, organ, and lead vocals and Van Campbell on drums, percussion and vocals. "A Touch Of Someone Else's Class" is the follow up to their acclaimed 2007's debut "Every Damn Time" (Alive), and it's a another slab of grungy, dirty, blues punk rock'n'roll with a heavy, greasy, touch of soul. This time the two-piece traveled to Akron, Ohio, to team up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and record in his newly built studio, equipped with vintage gear. The result is everything one would expect, and more. The "blues groove monsters" deliver another blues/soul/rock masterpiece of gothic proportions. Worth mentioning is a guest appearance by Ralph Carney on horns, best known for his long-time association with Tom Waits. The CD version includes one song NOT AVAILABLE on the vinyl (featuring Dan Auerbach on guitar), and comes with 2 DIFFERENT covers; one CD cover features John's KEYBOARDS, the other one features Van's DRUM Kit. "With a sound that's blues-rooted but steeped in Stooges sludge, the Heavies' cranky, cranked-up sets burn black as tire fires-think Exile on Main Street recorded in Howlin' Wolf's casket. Nothing smooth or clean here. Just eight-bar skronk in bad need of a tetanus shot." - The Pitch. "Their attack of drums and keyboards is a mean, f-ed up, gospel punky hybrid and rocks with ragged, soulful passion." - Rock Sound. "Tom Waits growls. Joe Cocker growls. Myers bark like a man who had his throat ripped out by a wolf. He gargles the thick blues drawl of a man who has never inhaled without a Marlboro Red in his gob." - NME CD $12 SKU:8142 BLACK KEYS RELATED/ RADIO MOSCOW - S/T -Label:ALIVE A psychedelic blues rock trio from Iowa produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. "They ride a wave of wah wah guitar infused, dirty-ass psych-powered blues rock in which one can smell the aroma of Old Granddad's and non filtered cigarette smoke" – Modern Fix. "An astonishingly good debut." - Stonerock.com. "These 10 songs sound like panzers on a sonic blitzkrieg." - Blues Revue. " Fun and slutty and cool." - Pop Matters CD $10 SKU:8083 BLACK KEYS RELATED/BRIMSTONE HOWL - Guts Of Steel - Label:ALIVE PRODUCED BY DAN OF THE BLACK KEYS A furious mix of 60's influenced garage and old school from Nebraska. "4 Beatles-headed psych-nerds with a taste for razor-sharp snake rock."-NME. "Cranked, lo-fi blues-rock from NE hoodlums."- Uncut. "A foot-stomping, ass-shaking, roof-rattling, 30-minute sonic assault."-HearYa. "Singer John Ziegler channels the ghosts of Jim Morrison and Rob Tyner with reverence and aplomb whilst his able bodied mates.- Amplifier. "Part bluesy roots punk ala Gun Club, part Oblivians/Childish lo-fi raunch, part 60s British Invasion slop; Brimstone Howl is ALL rock'n'roll.”– Lowcut CD $10 SKU:8085 BOBO, HARLAN T.- I’m Your Man - Label:GONER Though Harlan T. Bobo is a strange and sometimes willfully eccentric character, his talent is simply impossible to deny. A late bloomer, the 41-year old has become a kind of doyen of depression, conjuring a wounded ladies' man persona that's as bleak and beautiful as stylistic archetypes like grim-voiced poet Leonard Cohen and MOR gloom merchant Lee Hazlewood. Written under the spell of their twin influences, Bobo's second album is a work of much greater depth than his debut, Too Much Love; the subtle joys of the songwriting and production on I'm Your Man only begin to reveal themselves after repeated listens... Hints of a somewhat loopy pop sensibility -- shades of Harry Nilsson -- also offer a new wrinkle to the songs here, making for an album and an artist bound for bigger things than local dominance. - Bob Mehr, Commercial Appeal - Best Memphis Music of 2007 CD $12 SKU:8101 CILIBRINAS DO EDEN- ST -Label:NO SMOKE RECORDS "Rita Lee of Os Mutantes and her friend Lúcia Turnbull's first outside project, these recordings were done for Philips in 1973. Cilibrinas Do Éden have played at Os Mutantes show in May 1973, at Palácio de Convenções do Anhembi, in São Paulo. It was Cilibrinas' first gig. At this show, Rita and Lúcia played with all the Os Mutantes backline, the show appeared to be a psychedelic edge with Rita and Lúcia dressed like some outside aliens for that time. They also dressed in colored clothes and feathers like a progressive rock band. Never officially released on vinyl or CD, Now a group of Brazilian fans with European residence pick the recordings and put them in this deluxe vinyl format, with only 500 numbered copies done. Also available in papersleeve CD in the same amount of copies. This release contain also two rare outtakes from Os Mutantes. You will certainly dig this if you like Mutantes: these recordings are a mix of the psychedelic Os Mutantes with some glam-rock freakness. Fantastic, professionally remastered sound, unbelievable material for all the Os Mutantes fans, and one of the best lost albums of Brazilian psychedelia!" CD $25 SKU:7933 COCOCOMA- ST - Label:Goner COCOCOMA began in 2005 as a two-piece husband and wife hurricane, with LISA shredding her fingers on bass and BILL pounding the drums and howling. The addition of MIKE FITZPATRICK (HEADACHE CITY, THE LATEST) on organ added thickness and flavor to the Cococoma storm. The band’s songs mix 1960s garage sensibilities with a brutal, near-hardcore punk rock attack, and hooks that will stay in your head for days. Completely untamed CD $12 SKU:8099 CONCEPT- Invasion -Label:LONG HAIR (GERMANY) Originally released 1979 on Reveal, Concept's 1st album Invasion is truly a highlight of Canadian psychedelic and acid rock. Its undoubted relevance to connoisseurs of psychedelic and acid rock finds valid in the group's multiple talents playing music of the late sixties /early seventies in the late seventies and early eighties. Maybe a little bit anachronistic then, but today a real killer for all lovers of the genre. Musically Concept's Invasion reminds sometimes to the early recordings of Amon Duul II with flaming guitar extensions, occasionally strange sound effects and surprising hooks. CD $26 SKU:7807 CRAZY RIVER - SOUNDS LIKE A MELON TO ME -Label:APARTMENT Multi-instrumentalist Per Gisle Galaaen from Norway play in numerous bands, including Slowburn, DEL, Birds, Kobi and many others. Galaaen has been touring Europe, Oceania and Japan partly as Crazy River and partly with DEL and Birds. He's also done collaborations with Keiji Haino, ultrasound, Alexander Rishaug and Carlos Giffoni to name a few. Galaaen has formerly released a split 7" (OHM records) with fellow-Norwegian Fredrik Ness Sevendal and has contributed to a few compilations, but "Sounds like a Melon to Me" is his first solo album. Strange whimsical pop songs with fuzzy heavy organ sound and cheerfull melancholia. CD $24 SKU:8064 DILLARD & CLARK- The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark -Label:WATER "The 1968 debut, originally released on A&M, from one of the first and finest L.A. country-rock outfits. Comprised of Gene Clark, hot on the heels of his departure from The Byrds and his debut solo release (with the Gosdin Bros.), and Doug Dillard, the virtuosic banjoist/guitarist of the Dillards. Gene Clark is perhaps the most underrated songwriter of the 1960s and this could very well be his finest post-Byrds moment. Featuring help from fellow Byrd Chris Hillman, future Burrito Brother 'Sneaky' Pete Kleinow, and future Burrito/Eagle Bernie Leadon, this is an absolutely essential piece of L.A. country-rock history, not to mention an out and out masterpiece. Contains 3 extra tracks and liner notes." CD $18 SKU:8081 DUREN, VAN- Are You Serious? -Label:WATER "Van Duren is pure power pop. He spent time in the Memphis trenches with the big boys (Big Star, Chris Bell, The Scruffs), and knows his way around a hook and a melody as well as any of his heroes from Todd Rundgren, McCartney, Emitt Rhodes and on to Badfinger. He went to high school with Jody Stephens, auditioned for Big Star after Bell's departure, and was in the short-lived but legendary Baker Street Regulars with both those cats. If you think Big Star never got the props they deserved, well they're The Beatles compared to Mr. Duren. This is his debut album, originally released in 1977 on the Big Sound label, and he is no also ran, he is the real deal, power pop at its finest. Contains liner notes." CD $18 SKU:8080 EARTHLING SOCIETY- BEAUTY AND THE BEAST -Label:FOUR ZERO Like the Morlocks from H.G Wells "The Time Machine", Earthling Society has made the ascent from dark to light with our new album "Beauty and the Beast". A farewell to our more obvious space rock leanings, instead we have drunk deep from the well of visionaries such as Syd Barrett, Todd Rundgren, Kevin Ayers and John Cale. Not to mention our increasing obsession with the seven classic Utopian albums that the Moody Blues created from 67 - 72. Twelve string acoustics replace the heavy monotonous riffs that are associated with modern day psychedelia. Autoharps, harmonies and mellotrons weave in and out of concise kosmiche hymns. Whilst the seriously over recorded space jam has had its dick well and truly kicked in the dirt. Still hell-bent on recording in every warehouse, kitchen and toilet; armed only with our trusty 24 track porta-studio; retaining our DIY ideology, dignity and our macrocosmic inward thinking, Earthling Society has created a psychedelic sound that reflects the other side of the mirror or a playroom steeped in summers dusk. CD $21 SKU:8140 FINAL SOLUTIONS- SONGS BY SOLUTIONS -Label:GONER MEMPHIS' art-damaged punk favorites return with a brand new album loaded with quality punk songwriting chops. Twelve rabid rockers delivered with manic energy, tuff riffs, and a juvenile sci-fi aesthetic. Includes the barn burners "Rubber Stamp Test," "Brown Panther," and "Liquid Brainstem Cocktail." THE FINAL SOLUTIONS are ZAC IVES (vocals), JUSTICE NACZYCZ (guitar), TOMMY TROUBLE (bass), and JAY REATARD (drums). Produced by Jay Reatard. IMPORT GW PICK CD $22 SKU:8102 FOOD BRAIN- BANSAN (JAPAN IMPORT)Label:UNIVERSAL Japanese import. Universal Naked Line Series. Reissue of mega-rarity from Japan. FOODBRAIN is all instrumental HEAVY PROGRESSIVE ROCK band from early 70's featuring Hiro Yanagida on HAMMOND ORGANS and hot-shot SHINKI CHEN on guitar. Shinki Chen we know from other legendary mega-rare albums like SHINKI & FRIENDS and SPEED, GLUE & SHINKI. 60s/70sPSYCH/PROG/FOLK CD $26 SKU:7579 GROUP DOUEH- Guitar Music from the Western Sahara -Label:Sublime Frequencies This is a CD reissue of the very first Sublime Frequencies LP, which sold out in an instant in early 2007. If you think you've heard all the great electric guitar styles in the world, think again. This Saharan sand-blizzard of fine-crushed glass will grind your face to a bloody pulp. Group Doueh play raw and unfiltered Saharawi music from the former colonial Spanish outpost of the Western Sahara. Doueh (pronounced "Doo-way") is their leader and a master of the electric guitar. He's been performing since he was a child playing in many groups before finally creating his own in the 1980s. Doueh says he's influenced by Western pop and rock music especially Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His sound is distorted, loud and unhinged with an impressive display of virtuosity and style only known in this part of the world. CD $20 SKU:7811 HOLMES, JAKE- The Above Ground Sound -Label:PHOENIX RECORDS When U.S. folk-rock singer/songwriter Jake Holmes opened for The Yardbirds in New York in August 1967, little did he suspect that one of his songs, "Dazed And Confused," would be "commandeered" by guitarist Jimmy Page and become one of his next band's major live showpieces. The band in question is, of course, Led Zeppelin, and although The Yardbirds did incorporate the song into their live set, it is the Led Zep version that provided Holmes with his 15 minutes of fame. Mr. Page, clearly suffering from a temporary bout of amnesia, forgetfully claimed the songwriting credit himself. Holmes had done the rounds of the New York folk scene, working in bands with the likes of Tim Rose before going solo. This, his first recording, originally appeared on the Tower label in 1967. The album is considered a folk-rock masterpiece, and was described at the time as "a songwriter, three guitars and a mirror." The guitars of Holmes and Ted Irwin (later to play with Elliot Murphy, Roy Buchanan and various country singers) are the only backing for Holmes' voice and the 10 short tracks are outstanding, but especially the sparer, stripped-down original version of "Dazed And Confused." CD $21 SKU:8109 HOME BLITZ - ST -Label:GULCHER Home Blitz is 21-year-old Daniel DiMaggio from Princeton, New Jersey. He recorded and released his first two singles on his own. When the first one showed up in my mailbox in '05, it was just what I was waiting to hear. The underground had drifted so far into abstract space that I was longing for something direct and simple. That first record was a magic whirl of early Modern Lovers, Big Star, and Flamin' Groovies circa '72--but with a casual no-fi vibe that sounded closer to the first couple Harry Pussy singles. Huh?! Yeah. Just about (non-)perfect! On this new Home Blitz CD release, Gulcher Records has collected those first two singles (way out of print), material from a cassette release, a new HB 12" EP, and two otherwise unavailable tracks. From the first single, "Apocalyptic Grades 2005" is a powerpop/postpunk hybrid with guitars that sound like the Fall circa '78 covering the Flamin' Groovies. On the very bratty "AC S.S.," it sounds to me like early Screamin' Mee-Mees crossed with early Modern Lovers. But my favorite from that first 7" is "Hey!" It comes on as if Big Star's RADIO CITY had been recorded under the more addled conditions of Alex Chilton's LIKE FLIES ON SHERBERT. It starts like a great noise-drenched powerpop anthem--"I got the gift that keeps on givin'/It's called electric guitar!"--but soon stops midstream. "I gotta get some gum," the singer complains. It picks up again after the song's imaginary bridge. A second guitar comes in--melodic and overloaded like a perfect 1969 Lou Reed guitar fill. CD $13 SKU:7785 JECK, PHILIP- Sand -Label:TOUCH (UK) This is Philip Jeck's fifth solo album for Touch. Sand was recorded live in Holland and England in 2006/2007 and edited in Liverpool in January, 2008 using Fidelity record players, Casio SK keyboards, a Behringer mixer and Sony mini-disc recorders. Following Philip Jeck's acclaimed collaboration with Gavin Bryars and Alter Ego on a new version of The Sinking of the Titanic, Sand is a set of seven new compositions that highlight Jeck's mastery of vinyl manipulation and personal and collective memories. During the past year, Jeck has refined and consolidated his unique sound, playing superb sets at the Faster Than Sound festival and at York Minster for Spire. Sand is at once elegiac, celebrational, mournful and uplifting. Those who have followed Jeck's development since his first release, Loopholes, will observe his return to the industrial textures that colored that collection, though here they are fused with his symphonic grace and continued development as a composer and live performer. Philip Jeck works with old records and record players salvaged from junk shops, turning them to his own purposes. He really does play them as musical instruments, creating an intensely personal language that evolves with each added part of a record. His is genuinely moving and transfixing music, where we hear the art, not the gimmick. CD $21 SKU:8110 JOHNSON, ROSS- Make It Stop! A compelling combination of stark folk, upbeat pop and acid rock, it's one of the most intense, intimate and beautiful recordings of its era, and has long been established as a cult classic. It makes its long-overdue reissue debut here, complete with rare photos, memorabilia and interviews with both artists (telling their story for the first time), making it an essential purchase for all fans of 1960s acid folk and pop. CD $22 SKU:7812 MANSON, CHARLES - THE SUMMER OF HATE-THE '67 SESSIONS -Label:ARTE LUPO Charles Manson's name should be no stranger to lovers of the weird and wonderful, having been sentenced to life without parole for his leadership of the cult, "The Family", who committed several highly-publicised murders in the late 60's. Before these events, Charlie had high-hopes of becoming a pop star, with his strange psychedelic folk music, bizarrely more fashionable today than ever. Here for the first time are the complete recordings that were made on 11th September 1967 in a rehearsal studio, which went onto be used as demos to try to secure a recording deal, which never happened. Spoken word elements throughout the 18 tracks (just under 45 minutes). Essential for collectors of 60's folk and weird psych freakouts. CD $21 SKU:8082 SKULLFLOWER- Desire for a Holy War -Label:UTECH RECORDS Desire for a Holy War is mayhem piled on top of mayhem piled on top of squalls of caustic feedback. Furies spitting oaths of shrouded vengeance from ancient tongues. Plague riders dealing death on mounts of venomous ether, hooves pounding the wild earth. Matthew Bower may have reached a watershed with last year's Abyssic Lowland Hiss (Heavy Blossom), but it is with Desire... that he has come to conquer. Never has Skullflower sounded so severe or remorseless. Utech Records has invoked a connate soul in visual artist Stephen Kasner to develop a second fine art series of CD releases for the label. The series will comprise nine volumes of 750 copies each over the course of 2008 beginning in April. Kasner has committed the bulk of his next outputs to painting original and exclusive canvases. His subject matter has yet to be disclosed, but the artist has spoken in general terms of a new direction he wants to explore in his work. A package unique to the series has been designed to highlight Kasner's residuum and the accompanying music. The foundation of the series is the belief that a visual device can bind a disparate body of music in a meaningful way. The genesis of this idea was first explored with photographer Max Aguilera-Hellweg in 2007 and the result was Utech Record's acclaimed Arc Series. Fruit borne from that venture has led to this stab at further examination. Kasner immediately saw value in the theory and agreed to help cultivate and refine it. EXPERIMENTAL CD $48 SKU:7582 TRENIERS, THE- This Is It -Label:REV OLA 2008 digitally remastered compilation featuring 30 of the finest moments from this Jump Blues outfit from the '40s and '50s led by twin brothers Cliff and Claude Trenier. Though their sound was Swing influenced, the Treniers incorporated a mighty thumping backbeat and songs that included the words "rock" and "roll". They were also known for the humorous content of many of their songs, and their on-stage acrobatics were seen as precursors to the wild antics of many later Rock 'N' Roll groups. In the 1950s, they moved closer towards an R&B influenced sound. Rev-Ola. CD $25 SKU:8136 BLITZING THE BALLROOM- VA -Label:PSYCHIC CIRCLE As the 70s took hold of the UK, the colourful expectations of the 60s had all but faded away. The Op Art, the psychedelics & the Victorian militria had been replaced by the greys and browns of geometric wallpaper, the three day week and the oh-so dull Heath/Wilson pendulum. Splashing a much-needed burst of posterpaint colour around came the movement which was to be known as Glam Rock. No one minded that its chief protagonists had been round the block a few times before. Marc Bolan, Gary Glitter, Alvin Stardust, Mud, The Sweet, Roy Wood & Slade had all been stomping around with varying degrees of success for many years. Tottering precariously around on silver platforms, made up like provocative pantomime dames, playing a strange drum-heavy confection based on Rock & Roll mixed with nursery rhyme pop simplicity, the pop world had its sparkling alternative to the head-nodding complexity of the double concept album. Heres a collection of splendid Glam obscurities, all laced with a harder edge, as if to prove that, should the need ever arise, these artistes could more than match their progressive counterparts for rock sensibility. COMPCD $19 SKU:8113 LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- Mexican Psychedelic Music - Label:QDK GERMANY The most recent volume of the Love, Peace & Poetry series, Mexican Psychedelic Music, takes as its focus what was one aspect of our second collection in this series, Latin American Psychedelic Music. While there are some parallels between the evolution of rock and roll in the US and Mexico, the stories are out of synch with each other in interesting ways. In the US, the first wave of rock and roll presented a challenge to longstanding racial divisions and repressed sexuality that was fought off (by 1960 Elvis was in the Army, Jerry Lee Lewis in exile, Chuck Berry in prison and Little Richard turned to Jesus) and replaced by the mostly bland and neutered pop of singers like Fabian, Dion, Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon and Pat Boone (if you've ever wonder what music might sound like in Hell listen to Pat Boone's covers of Little Richard; possibly the most frightening music ever made). The history of Mexican pop music remains calm and fairly controversy free through the 1950s and into the late 1960s. The economic prosperity that fueled the Baby Boom generation in the United States didn't exist for Mexican youth, nor was Mexico as racially volatile or sexually repressed. In the 1950's the culture of the United States was far more shook up by Elvis and his gyrating army than was Mexico. Rock and roll became dangerous in Mexico when it began to be mixed with a challenge to the political status quo. Tracks from rare LPs by The Flying Karpets, Grupo Ciruela, Los Ovnis, La Onda De Survival, and Nahuatl help complete our tour through the various climates of 1960s-1970s Mexican psychedelia, and readily demonstrate the origins of a musical culture that continues on into contemporary times in the many bands that make up the active Mexican music scene here in the new century COMPCD $19 SKU:8121 PERFECT UNPOP: PEEL SHOW HITS & LONG-LOST LO-FI FAVORITES- VA Vol. 1 1976-1980 -Label:CHERRY RED Perfect Unpop is based on a dangerous assumption: that if you were ever touched by John Peel's enthusiasm for spiky '70s pop, then by now you've probably found yourself a copy of the Undertones' Teenage Kicks. The same applies to raw, beautiful singles by the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, the Clash and the first five Fall albums none of which are included here. Instead, here's a collection of Peel favorites a little less likely to be anthologized, eulogized, or to crop up on your iPod. Anyone who ever cuddled up alone at night with Peel will recognize the glee with which he pounced on these devil-may-care, slightly broken pop songs. Indie also-rans these bands may have been in the Sting 'n' Bono scheme of things, but add up all these flashes of underdog genius, and here s a CD to rival any other from the era of the questionable stringy tie. Although we're missing the voice that always seemed to be speaking to us alone, the unearthing of these nuggets from the playlists will recreate something of the atmosphere of the Peel Show for his undercover legions, and hopefully some young Johnny-cum-latelies as well. Make no mistake, we're talking all-time highlights here where six seconds of dead air would be followed by a sheepish, slightly breathless admission that Peel had been off bopping around the studio!" In the early seventies in Europe there was still space for some "good vibrations", as proved by the Kralingen Pop festival, near Rotterdam, on June 1970. The event, documented by the movie Stamping Ground, is often remembered as the European Woodstock, because of the presence of many artists that had already played on that historical three-days concert, like Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat, Country Joe. Steve appeared on successful albums such as Angels Egg, You and his final album with the band Shamal. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled Fish Rising This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System Seven. In 1976 Steve recorded the album "L" with Todd Rundgren producing. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the Steve Hillage Band which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976. Following the live debut the band played numerous live concerts including a concert in Germany in early 1977 for German television. This performance is now available on DVD as Steve Hillage Live in Germany. Following this tour the original line up of the Steve Hillage band broke up and Steve and Miquette recorded further albums such as Motivation Radio and Green with different line ups of the Steve Hillage Band. In late 1978 the band released a live album entitled Live Herald and toured in support of that album. In early 1979 Steve embarked on another British tour that took in a date at his old university in Kent. This concert was filmed for television. This British tour was to be the last tour undertaken by the Steve Hillage Band as Steve moved into studio work and production which continues to this day alongside his work both live and in the studio with his System Seven project. Limited to 300 copies. On A Meadow - Lea has good fuzz guitar paired to pastoral lyrics, while Mona Lose bears overt traces of malice. Burning The Weed sounds quite surprisingly akin to US Kaleidoscope. The Lens is Procol Harum on a bad trip and even foreshadows Joy Division! This is great! LP $29 SKU:7860 BOBO, HARLAN T.- I’m Your Man - Label:GONER Though Harlan T. - Bob Mehr, Commercial Appeal - Best Memphis Music of 2007 LP $12 SKU:8100 BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE- MY BLOODY UNDERGROUND (2LP) -Label:A RECORDS 180 gram red vinyl double LP version. Krautrock is a clear influence for them, but the duo doesn’t look to simply reenact the ‘70s German underground. On Lie in Light, their second LP, the band incorporates the era’s characteristic motorik sound with droning guitars and whirring synthesizers to make dizzying, atmospheric soundscapes. The album succeeds as a result of its seamlessness. Its songs–particularly “You & I” and the title track–are great, blending their components (Krautrock, shoegaze, field recordings) so finely that they’re virtually indistinguishable from one another. The result is a stargazing guitar record full of warmth and imagination. LP $15 SKU:8079 CREWE & CHARLES FOX, BOB- Barbarella OST LP -Label:DYNOVOICE Original soundtrack to the Roger Vadim-directed movie from 1968, featuring Jane Fonda. "Bob Crewe is the man behind Dynovoice Records and the 1967 instrumental single 'Music to Watch Girls By.' The Barbarella soundtrack, originally released in 1968, was performed by The Bob Crewe Generation Orchestra & sung by The Glitterhouse and Bob Crewe. "The cult flick Barbarella has pretty much haunted Jane Fonda's career since its release in 1968. An iconic film of the cheesy-side of the Sixties, the movie contained songs and score by Bob Crewe & Charles Fox. Once you hear the opening crooning song 'Barbarella', you know what kind of an album you're in store for. There are a few songs scattered through the album, each one fitting snuggly into the style set by the drug-influenced late 60s. The score, for the most part, is like a band having a jam session. Punchy brass, electric guitars, and even orchestral interludes ('The Sex Machine) give the whole album a really eclectic (if not slightly schizophrenic) personality. I have to admit - it might be as cheesy as it comes, but it's just a lot of fun to listen to." -- Dan Goldwasser LP $14 SKU:8077 DAVANI, DAVE -FOUR-- Fused - Label:WAH WAH The imminent vinyl reissue of one of the best Hammond organ fueled LPs from the Swingin' London years! The superb 'Fused!' LP, originally released by Parlophone in 1965, is a killer sample of what Davani and Co. delivered in the sweaty smokey night clubs of London that year. First class Hammond powered mod jazz and R&B, deeply rooted in the sounds of the fab Jimmy McGriff, 'Big' John Patton, Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith soul jazz albums imported from the US at the time. LP $24 SKU:8061 DOO SOO, KIM- 10 Days Butterfly 180 dbl lp -Label:PSF LAST COPIES! Kim Doo Soo is the deepest and most introspective of Korea's acid folk singers. Many are the legends that cling to his songs - political oppression, alcoholism, suicide, a ten-year period of mountain seclusion. Despite having been active since the mid eighties and having released four acclaimed albums in Korea, most Western listeners only became aware of him through his tracks on the recent Damon & Naomi compilation, International Sad Hits. On Ten Days Butterfly, his fifth album, he mines productive veins of profound melancholy, animistic nature, and unfathomable, hermetic affection. The whole is couched in a veil of the most gorgeous still melodicism, Kims vocals and guitar shaded with subtle accordion, violin, piano, organ and harmonica. A reflective and unearthly beautiful masterpiece. 180 gram vinyl LP $79 SKU:7310 DRONA PARVA/ULTRASOUND- SONGS FROM ENTOPIC GARDEN, VOL. 1 180 GRAM VINYL -Label:TIME-LAG 1st In a series of split LPs loosely in tribute to POPOL VUH, as wel as the 1st release on this label. LP $12 SKU:7971 FARQUHAR, J.W.- FORMALE FEMALE -Label:SHADOKS MUSIC 450 numbered / glossy heavy sleeve / 180 gram pressing All tracks where recorded by JW Farquhar in 1972. The songs on THE FORMAL FEMALE were written as an outcry against the materialistic nature of the woman during that time period in 1972. Many will tell you it is still that way. JW had recently extricated himself from a 10 year marriage and the words from this experience fit the lyrics on the album still. During that time he lived by himself in a 3rd floor apartment in Philadelphia. It was a street with a lot of traffic. Car horns, busses, police sirens, fire engines, screams, and sometimes even gunshots filled the airwaves. For this reason he sealed up the windows and any other openings with sound proofing foam. This was necessary because his music was recorded in there. JW was the instrumentalist; rhythm guitar, lead guitar, drums, vocals, and bass. However he could not play them all at once, so he purchased a four track simulsync Teac recorder ..professional version. This allowed him to record on one track and then play it back and separately record on a second, third, and fourth track. The original tracks were recorded at 15 IPS. A final mix was then made in stereo with yet a fifth overdub, when needed. At that time other effects were limited. It is amazing electric fuzz album full of effects and it's an masterpiece such as D.R. Hooker. Extra heavy psychedelic. LP $45 SKU:8068 FERGUSON-HULLIT - MUSHROOM PALACE -Label:KIVA RECORDS Limited 500 copies vinyl edition. Mushroom Palace is Dreu Ferguson Sr. and Brian Hullit's collaboration into the psychedelic folk blues dimension. Hulitts words and Fergusons guitar establish the album from the beginning with title cut "Mushroom Palace", a drug lyric upbeat rocker complete with laughter, subtle background effects and strangeness, followed by the 60's sound of "The Essence" which is a psychedelic chant put to music complete with whispers, druggy references, 60's guitar etc. Then comes the killer electric guitar cut "Maelstrom" with great lyric and guitar playing. As the album evolves into more of a folk blues direction, great cuts "Without a Face" and "History Following Me" stand out. The humorous rocker "Bad Weather Mama" is also a fun spot. There is a Dylan esque cut "If I Disappeared Today" and spoken word cut "Words of Whispers" complete with a tape loop and backwards guitar! Not too forget the 60's pop sound of "Price of Love"(Hey is this an old Monkee?) and the drug chant "Painting", Mushroom Palace" is an ambitious effort qualifying for inclusion in several genres. A two man effort, the album has a private underground feel to it throughout which contributes to it's charm. Lyrically fantastic, Hulitt exorcizes demons of drugs, the bottle, women and death, culminating in the hopeful and beautiful "Even If". Ferguson's guitar playing is on target throughout with a nice touch of the throbbing wahwah on "Easy Prey To Time" and dobro on "History Following Me". The cover art is great front and back with visions of psychedelia heaven 'neath a mushroom.. Close Your Eyes...Open Your Mind...We bid you welcome to the Mushroom Palace. LP $23 SKU:7929 FOREST- FULL CIRCLE -Label:TIMELESS This album has both brutal and beautiful elements, and the raw acoustic tunes create weird and very enchanting music. There are much medieval influences here, but the overall aesthetics are not luckily very idealized or fantasy related, but sincere and realistic, filled with mystery, misery and violence. Music is peaceful but partly disturbing too. "Bluebell" was quite good track, and the last song "Autumn Childhood" is very weird with strange rhythm changes and several parts. "The Midnight Hanging of A Runaway Serf" was also quite affecting in its brutality and realism. "Graveyard" is also very beautiful and quite accessible song, but maybe best of them all is "Gypsy girl & Rambleway", describing a love affair with very raw medieval sounds. Highly recommended! From the English-speaking community of Montreal, the group was very explicit in their desire to emulate the Rolling Stones, and most of their 1966-1968 singles (as well as their sole LP, from 1967) were in a raunchy R&B/blues-rock style. Their most successful single, "1-2-5," gained fame when it was reissued on one of the first Pebbles compilations of garage singles in the '70s. All of their material was reissued in the '80s. Australian legend Spencer P. Jones (The Beasts Of Bourbon, The Johnnys) records this last album up to date in his particular raw bluesy mood. In this occasion he is backed by The Escape Committee (which has been his backing band for the last few years). A crossway where Keith Richards, Richard Hell and Aussie swamp blues meet in melodies and compositions, and they are supported with the cooperation of other musicians such as Charlie Owen. In this new album Spencer P. Jones shows up his musical debt with The Rolling Stones and takes it to his musical side. Of course there are as well dark and apocalyptic tracks with the genuine sound of SPJ (listen for example to "death trip U.S.A."). LP $26 SKU:8025 MORNING AFTER- BLUE BLOOD -Label:SHADOKS MUSIC 450 numbered / glossy heavy sleeve / engraved artwork / 180 gram pressing. Here we have a completely unknown album from England from 1971. Morning After recorded this LP as a demo only to acquire a record deal (as so many bands did in the late 60s early 70s). So the album was pressed only in tiny amounts. The recording was with home studio equipment. Some of the tracks on the album sound like Blues Rock from the late Fleetwood Mac and some have a more progressive touch such as Shuttah. Great & heavy guitar work, fuzz and wah-wah all over the album, snotty vocals, all own great compositions. The album title Blue Blood assumed a noble wealthy family and a member of the establishment, but the music and lyrics are just the opposite. With extensive new liner notes by the LP reissue producers. "In 1969, John Phillips was moving past The Mamas and The Papas, and assembled a collection of songs at his home studio that would eventually become his first solo album, and the only one to be released during his lifetime. It is an album reflective of the changing era, and the ever-changing composer and arranger. The album was produced by Lou Adler, who produced all of the Mamas and the Papas recordings as well as Carol King's Tapestry and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Playing on the album are many of the session musicians who contributed to the success of The Mamas and The Papas, Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson, as well as countless other recordings in the '60s and '70s, and whom John dubbed the 'greatest players in the world' (including Hal Blaine, Larry Knechtel, Joe Osborn, James Burton, Buddy Emmons and Red Rhodes). Mastered from a new analog-to-digital transfer from the original Lou Adler mix tape. John Phillips has been called one of the greatest pop songwriters of the later 20th century." LP $21 SKU:8126 PRIVACY- Without Mercy One-Sided -Label:ANTHEM “ I had the good fortune of playing a show with LAUREL KNAPP (aka PRIVACY) earlier this year here in SF. Having only met her a couple of hours before the show I really had no Idea what to expect. Probably why I was totally surprised to find my mouth wide open once she got about two minutes into her set. Her gentle singing, which is really more akin to breathing softly and talking at the same time, was, and is on this recording, something to behold. Laurel's dreamy loom may lack the histrionics so fawned over by the kids these days, but I say drama ain't everything. Without Mercy is a captivating collection of monochromatic love blues, tenderly propelled along by smoky acoustic guitar strum and a husky vocal drone. A great testament to minimal space, emotional inversion, and the resonance that a style lacking in so-called technique can produce from simple charisma."-Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Sacros ('The Sacred') was a Chilean rock band inspired by the spiritual passion and veneration for the great gods of South America, such as Quetzalcoatl, the Plumed Serpent, god of the ancient Mayas and Viracocha, Lord of Tiahuanaku in the Andes mountains. Sacros recorded the debut LP on the state label IRT and the production was destroyed by the militaries. Only very few copies survived from destruction. The music goes in the same direction as Los Jaivas, Los Blops and El Congreso (all from Chile) and Lula Cortes from Brazil. It has a great 12 string Rickenbacker sounds, effects, great vocals and rhythms with an experimental touch. You can call this easy one of the rarest albums from Latin America since only a handful of copies survived. Patricio Panussis (guitar & vocals) Hernan Valdovinos (bass & vocals) and Tomas R. LP $24 SKU:7943 SIMMONS, JEFF- Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up -Label:WORLD IN SOUND When this album came out in early 1970 it totally flew below the media radar and sank without a trace. Too bad really. Although admittedly not for all tastes, for those of us tuned into Jeff Simmons' passionate, uncompromising, and genre bending vision and execution of expression, "Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up" is truly a singular acheivement. Revelatory and idiosyncratic both lyrically and musically, it's like nothing that I've ever heard before (or since!). Lots of interesting musical textures here, supported by cool arrangements and tempo shifts. We also find tight virtuosic ensemble playing with the occasional solo never overstaying it's welcome. Although not the greatest singer, Simmons brilliance lies in finding just the right character to stand and deliver in each of his quirky pieces. Whether it be the cosmic lounge crooning of 'Aqueous Humore', the edgy psycho emotive 'Raye', the cooly deadpan observant 'Madame Du Barry', the desparately resigned 'I'm In The Music Business', or the joyfully wailing 'Appian Way', Simmons knows how to populate his surrealistic landscapes. For me his intuitive sense of fun, abandon, and purpose combined with the kaleidoscopic funhouse-mirrored angular delivery keeps this masterwork as fresh sounding today as much as it was head-scratchingly disturbed almost 38 years ago. Transcendantly exquisite to some or palpably nonsensical to many, "Lucille" remains as one of my personal alltime favorite albums of any category. LP $30 SKU:7813 SMITH, ELLIOTT- Figure 8 DBL LP -Label:PLAIN RECORDINGS His second release for the Dreamworks label, and fifth overall, Figure 8 is a lush and beautifully melancholy collection of pop songs. Gone is the intimate lo-fi feel of his Kill Rock Stars albums, replaced by intricate arrangements and orchestration. One gets the feeling that the sound of his earlier work was not by choice but by economic necessity and Smith was now, with a major label budget and backing, able to establish himself as a pop craftsman on par with Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney." Originally released 2000. LP $25 SKU:7879 SMITH, ELLIOTT- XO -Label:PLAIN RECORDINGS "Following the success and acclaim of his two releases on the Kill Rock Stars label, as well an Oscar nomination for the use of his song 'Miss Misery' in the film Good Will Hunting, the late Elliott Smith signed with Dreamworks for the 1998 release of XO. With a major label budget for this, his fourth full length album, Smith was able to craft a fully realized pop masterpiece, fulfilling the promise of previous releases. Though firmly in the McCartney/Lennon/Rundgren/Davies school of songwriting Smith was nothing if not an original. Possibly his best record." LP $22 SKU:7878 WITTHUESER & WESTRUPP- DER JESUSPILZ -Label:PILZ Freaked out psychedelic pioneers from Germany. Kosmische folk music! Played largely on treated acoustic instruments, this is still some of the most beautifully spacy and spiritual music from the era - rather humorous at times too.
