Fantastic, whining guitar driving beat ala 80s Manchester sound, totally infectious. INTELLIGENCE- DEBT & ESP -Label:PLASTIC IDOL  Two more mind-bending tunes from the desk of LARS FINBERG, Seattle songcharmer and "the brains" behind the INTELLIGENCE. The former A-FRAMES and DIPERS member has been a busy boy since the Intelligence morphed into his full-time gig a couple years back, treating the world to two LPs (Deuteronomy and Icky Baby, both released by In The Red) and more frequent live dates. Whether fleshing out his sound with a full band or flying solo, like he does on this record, there is no question the man's work is ace. Recordings from 2007 are unearthed on this single, pairing a groover ("Debt & ESP") with a shaker ("Chateau Bandit"). Both tunes were blown up nicely by WEASEL WALTER (XBXRX, FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, etc.). Limited to 600 copies on black vinyl.  45 RPM  $7 SKU:8053

POPPETS- GET BACK -Label:PLASTIC IDOL Sweden's the HEARTATTACKS called it quits earlier this year following the release of their second EP on Plastic Idol, entitled Stay/Go. MAGNUS ANDERSSON didn't waste any time finding a new outlet for his songwriting prowess--and he didn't have to look very far. POPPETS is Magnus, his girlfriend LINA, and a drum machine. Stripped-down punky pop is the order of the day--a few well-placed chords, lighthearted lyrics, and tempos that go hand-in-hand with rump-shaking and beer spillage. It's what the tastemakers at Victim of Time dubbed "hot blasting party songs." Four more gems on this EP, sure to go down as a soundtrack for good times. SHINDIG!- Issue 4 May-June 2008- Label: In our May-June issue, Shindig! Magazine has persuaded Andy Partridge and Dave Gregory to talk about their heartfelt love of British psychedelia and why XTC developed the alter-ego THE DUKES OF THE STRATOSPHEAR in the mid-80s. Both Andy and Dave grew up in the late '60s and were enthralled by the psychedelic records that they heard on the radio as teenagers. You could say that eccentric British spirit was ingrained in them at an early age. As writer Marco Rossi notes in this issue's cover story "XTC always had something psychedelic about them, even on their earliest punk sides".The massive impact that British psychedelia is still having on contemporary music is exemplified by the re-imagined Peppersesque spectacle of new bands such as PANIC AT THE DISCO. WARNING : Acid Mothers Temple & The Pink Ladies Blues is a different group than the well-known Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO and Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno. This new Japanese band was created in April 2005 by Magic Aum Gigi (ex-Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO). His main works with the "Melting Paraiso UFO" can be found on the album "AbsolutelyFreak-Out" (2001), the compilation "Do whatever you want, don't do whatever you don't want!!" (2002), and has released his own solo album "MMMM - My Metal Machine Music" (2004). AHMED, ILYAS - THE VERTIGO OF DAWN -Label:TIME-LAG  Much anticipated first proper release after a string of ear tugging & increasingly impressive private press CDRs. A real shinning spirit in these somewhat goofy times of "folkpsych" abuse, this guy nails it like its in his DNA. Way beyond a simple formula, this is a complete tonal voyage. Opening the album with a dark ritual of dueling reeds and buzzing drones, things than erupt into some seriously burning psych raga excursion built from totally heavy, jamming, acoustic guitar licks, eastern grooving hand percussions, stoned backwards or fuzzed-out electric guitar splatters, and subtle creaky drones. The vocals are nearly unintelligible but swirl beautifully through most songs like floating smokey ripples. Woozy, headbobbing, and completely THERE. BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES -- A Touch Of Someone Else's Class - Label:ALIVE  Black Diamond Heavies is a self-described punk-ass blues duo from the South consisting of John Wesley Myers on bass keys, fender Rhodes, organ, and lead vocals and Van Campbell on drums, percussion and vocals. "A Touch Of Someone Else's Class" is the follow up to their acclaimed 2007's debut "Every Damn Time" (Alive), and it's a another slab of grungy, dirty, blues punk rock'n'roll with a heavy, greasy, touch of soul. This time the two-piece traveled to Akron, Ohio, to team up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and record in his newly built studio, equipped with vintage gear. The result is everything one would expect, and more. The "blues groove monsters" deliver another blues/soul/rock masterpiece of gothic proportions. Worth mentioning is a guest appearance by Ralph Carney on horns, best known for his long-time association with Tom Waits. BOBO, HARLAN T.- I’m Your Man - Label:GONER Though Harlan T. Bobo is a strange and sometimes willfully eccentric character, his talent is simply impossible to deny. A late bloomer, the 41-year old has become a kind of doyen of depression, conjuring a wounded ladies' man persona that's as bleak and beautiful as stylistic archetypes like grim-voiced poet Leonard Cohen and MOR gloom merchant Lee Hazlewood. Written under the spell of their twin influences, Bobo's second album is a work of much greater depth than his debut, Too Much Love; the subtle joys of the songwriting and production on I'm Your Man only begin to reveal themselves after repeated listens... CILIBRINAS DO EDEN- ST -Label:NO SMOKE RECORDS "Rita Lee of Os Mutantes and her friend Lúcia Turnbull's first outside project, these recordings were done for Philips in 1973. Cilibrinas Do Éden have played at Os Mutantes show in May 1973, at Palácio de Convenções do Anhembi, in São Paulo. It was Cilibrinas' first gig. At this show, Rita and Lúcia played with all the Os Mutantes backline, the show appeared to be a psychedelic edge with Rita and Lúcia dressed like some outside aliens for that time. They also dressed in colored clothes and feathers like a progressive rock band. Never officially released on vinyl or CD, Now a group of Brazilian fans with European residence pick the recordings and put them in this deluxe vinyl format, with only 500 numbered copies done. Also available in papersleeve CD in the same amount of copies. This release contain also two rare outtakes from Os Mutantes. You will certainly dig this if you like Mutantes: these recordings are a mix of the psychedelic Os Mutantes with some glam-rock freakness. COCOCOMA- ST - Label:Goner COCOCOMA began in 2005 as a two-piece husband and wife hurricane, with LISA shredding her fingers on bass and BILL pounding the drums and howling. CONCEPT- Invasion -Label:LONG HAIR (GERMANY) Originally released 1979 on Reveal, Concept's 1st album Invasion is truly a highlight of Canadian psychedelic and acid rock. Its undoubted relevance to connoisseurs of psychedelic and acid rock finds valid in the group's multiple talents playing music of the late sixties /early seventies in the late seventies and early eighties. Maybe a little bit anachronistic then, but today a real killer for all lovers of the genre. Musically Concept's Invasion reminds sometimes to the early recordings of Amon Duul II with flaming guitar extensions, occasionally strange sound effects and surprising hooks. CD  $26 SKU:7807

CRAZY RIVER - SOUNDS LIKE A MELON TO ME -Label:APARTMENT Multi-instrumentalist Per Gisle Galaaen from Norway play in numerous bands, including Slowburn, DEL, Birds, Kobi and many others. Galaaen has been touring Europe, Oceania and Japan partly as Crazy River and partly with DEL and Birds. Group Doueh play raw and unfiltered Saharawi music from the former colonial Spanish outpost of the Western Sahara. Doueh (pronounced "Doo-way") is their leader and a master of the electric guitar. He's been performing since he was a child playing in many groups before finally creating his own in the 1980s. Doueh says he's influenced by Western pop and rock music especially Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. HOLMES, JAKE- The Above Ground Sound -Label:PHOENIX RECORDS  When U.S. folk-rock singer/songwriter Jake Holmes opened for The Yardbirds in New York in August 1967, little did he suspect that one of his songs, "Dazed And Confused," would be "commandeered" by guitarist Jimmy Page and become one of his next band's major live showpieces. The band in question is, of course, Led Zeppelin, and although The Yardbirds did incorporate the song into their live set, it is the Led Zep version that provided Holmes with his 15 minutes of fame. Mr. Page, clearly suffering from a temporary bout of amnesia, forgetfully claimed the songwriting credit himself. Holmes had done the rounds of the New York folk scene, working in bands with the likes of Tim Rose before going solo. This, his first recording, originally appeared on the Tower label in 1967. The album is considered a folk-rock masterpiece, and was described at the time as "a songwriter, three guitars and a mirror." The guitars of Holmes and Ted Irwin (later to play with Elliot Murphy, Roy Buchanan and various country singers) are the only backing for Holmes' voice and the 10 short tracks are outstanding, but especially the sparer, stripped-down original version of "Dazed And Confused." HOME BLITZ  - ST -Label:GULCHER Home Blitz is 21-year-old Daniel DiMaggio from Princeton, New Jersey. He recorded and released his first two singles on his own. When the first one showed up in my mailbox in '05, it was just what I was waiting to hear. The underground had drifted so far into abstract space that I was longing for something direct and simple. That first record was a magic whirl of early Modern Lovers, Big Star, and Flamin' Groovies circa '72--but with a casual no-fi vibe that sounded closer to the first couple Harry Pussy singles. Huh?! Yeah. Just about (non-)perfect! On this new Home Blitz CD release, Gulcher Records has collected those first two singles (way out of print), material from a cassette release, a new HB 12" EP, and two otherwise unavailable tracks. From the first single, "Apocalyptic Grades 2005" is a powerpop/postpunk hybrid with guitars that sound like the Fall circa '78 covering the Flamin' Groovies. On the very bratty "AC S.S.," it sounds to me like early Screamin' Mee-Mees crossed with early Modern Lovers. But my favorite from that first 7" is "Hey!" It comes on as if Big Star's RADIO CITY had been recorded under the more addled conditions of Alex Chilton's LIKE FLIES ON SHERBERT. It starts like a great noise-drenched powerpop anthem--"I got the gift that keeps on givin'/It's called electric guitar!"--but soon stops midstream. "I gotta get some gum," the singer complains. It picks up again after the song's imaginary bridge. A second guitar comes in--melodic and overloaded like a perfect 1969 Lou Reed guitar fill. CD  $13 SKU:7785

LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- African Psychedelic Music - Label:QDK GERMANY  This is volume eight of the Love, Peace & Poetry series. Many records on this compilation are from South Africa, but it also covers countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. As in the other six volumes of this series the tracks are only taken from rare LP's and some fetches prices over $1500 for an original. The biggest problem with original records from African countries are finding them in good condition. The turntables where very very poor and the hot and humid climate does not preserve records very good. Sometimes termites eaten away complete record covers. In addition earthquakes, sandstorms, floods, wars, revolutions and other heavy influences made it hard to release albums and keep them in good shape since the late 60's. All this makes this compilation very special beside the amazing good music. While there are some parallels between the evolution of rock and roll in the US and Mexico, the stories are out of synch with each other in interesting ways. In the US, the first wave of rock and roll presented a challenge to longstanding racial divisions and repressed sexuality that was fought off (by 1960 Elvis was in the Army, Jerry Lee Lewis in exile, Chuck Berry in prison and Little Richard turned to Jesus) and replaced by the mostly bland and neutered pop of singers like Fabian, Dion, Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon and Pat Boone (if you've ever wonder what music might sound like in Hell listen to Pat Boone's covers of Little Richard; possibly the most frightening music ever made). The history of Mexican pop music remains calm and fairly controversy free through the 1950s and into the late 1960s. The economic prosperity that fueled the Baby Boom generation in the United States didn't exist for Mexican youth, nor was Mexico as racially volatile or sexually repressed. In the 1950's the culture of the United States was far more shook up by Elvis and his gyrating army than was Mexico. Rock and roll became dangerous in Mexico when it began to be mixed with a challenge to the political status quo. Many records on this compilation are from South Africa, but it also covers countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. The biggest problem with original records from African countries are finding them in good condition. The turntables where very very poor and the hot and humid climate does not preserve records very good. Sometimes termites eaten away complete record covers. In addition earthquakes, sandstorms, floods, wars, revolutions and other heavy influences made it hard to release albums and keep them in good shape since the late 60's. HILLAGE, STEVE- Live in England 1979 -Label:F - Minor Steve Hillage first came to prominence as a member of the multi national rock band Gong. Steve appeared on successful albums such as Angels Egg, You and his final album with the band Shamal. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled Fish Rising This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System Seven.  In 1976 Steve recorded the album "L" with Todd Rundgren producing. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the Steve Hillage Band which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976. Following the live debut the band played numerous live concerts including a concert in Germany in early 1977 for German television. This performance is now available on DVD as Steve Hillage Live in Germany.  Following this tour the original line up of the Steve Hillage band broke up and Steve and Miquette recorded further albums such as Motivation Radio and Green with different line ups of the Steve Hillage Band. In late 1978 the band released a live album entitled Live Herald and toured in support of that album. In early 1979 Steve embarked on another British tour that took in a date at his old university in Kent. This concert was filmed for television. This British tour was to be the last tour undertaken by the Steve Hillage Band as Steve moved into studio work and production which continues to this day alongside his work both live and in the studio with his System Seven project. Krautrock is a clear influence for them, but the duo doesn’t look to simply reenact the ‘70s German underground. On Lie in Light, their second LP, the band incorporates the era’s characteristic motorik sound with droning guitars and whirring synthesizers to make dizzying, atmospheric soundscapes. The album succeeds as a result of its seamlessness. Its songs–particularly “You & I” and the title track–are great, blending their components (Krautrock, shoegaze, field recordings) so finely that they’re virtually indistinguishable from one another. "The cult flick Barbarella has pretty much haunted Jane Fonda's career since its release in 1968. An iconic film of the cheesy-side of the Sixties, the movie contained songs and score by Bob Crewe & Charles Fox. Once you hear the opening crooning song 'Barbarella', you know what kind of an album you're in store for. There are a few songs scattered through the album, each one fitting snuggly into the style set by the drug-influenced late 60s. The score, for the most part, is like a band having a jam session. Punchy brass, electric guitars, and even orchestral interludes ('The Sex Machine) give the whole album a really eclectic (if not slightly schizophrenic) personality. FARQUHAR, J.W.- FORMALE FEMALE -Label:SHADOKS MUSIC 450 numbered / glossy heavy sleeve / 180 gram pressing All tracks where recorded by JW Farquhar in 1972. The songs on THE FORMAL FEMALE were written as an outcry against the materialistic nature of the woman during that time period in 1972. Many will tell you it is still that way. JW had recently extricated himself from a 10 year marriage and the words from this experience fit the lyrics on the album still. During that time he lived by himself in a 3rd floor apartment in Philadelphia. It was a street with a lot of traffic. Car horns, busses, police sirens, fire engines, screams, and sometimes even gunshots filled the airwaves. For this reason he sealed up the windows and any other openings with sound proofing foam. This was necessary because his music was recorded in there. JW was the instrumentalist; rhythm guitar, lead guitar, drums, vocals, and bass. However he could not play them all at once, so he purchased a four track simulsync Teac recorder ..professional version. This allowed him to record on one track and then play it back and separately record on a second, third, and fourth track. The original tracks were recorded at 15 IPS. A final mix was then made in stereo with yet a fifth overdub, when needed. At that time other effects were limited. It is amazing electric fuzz album full of effects and it's an masterpiece such as D.R. Hooker. Extra heavy psychedelic. LP  $45 SKU:8068

FERGUSON-HULLIT - MUSHROOM PALACE -Label:KIVA RECORDS  Limited 500 copies vinyl edition. Mushroom Palace is Dreu Ferguson Sr. and Brian Hullit's collaboration into the psychedelic folk blues dimension. Hulitts words and Fergusons guitar establish the album from the beginning with title cut "Mushroom Palace", a drug lyric upbeat rocker complete with laughter, subtle background effects and strangeness, followed by the 60's sound of "The Essence" which is a psychedelic chant put to music complete with whispers, druggy references, 60's guitar etc.Then comes the killer electric guitar cut "Maelstrom" with great lyric and guitar playing. As the album evolves into more of a folk blues direction, great cuts "Without a Face" and "History Following Me" stand out. The humorous rocker "Bad Weather Mama" is also a fun spot. There is a Dylan esque cut "If I Disappeared Today" and spoken word cut "Words of Whispers" complete with a tape loop and backwards guitar! Not too forget the 60's pop sound of "Price of Love"(Hey is this an old Monkee?) and the drug chant "Painting", Mushroom Palace" is an ambitious effort qualifying for inclusion in several genres. A two man effort, the album has a private underground feel to it throughout which contributes to it's charm. Lyrically fantastic, Hulitt exorcizes demons of drugs,the bottle, women and death,culminating in the hopeful and beautiful "Even If". Ferguson's guitar playing is on target throughout with a nice touch of the throbbing wahwah on "Easy Prey To Time" and dobro on "History Following Me". FOREST- FULL CIRCLE -Label:TIMELESS This album has both brutal and beautiful elements, and the raw acoustic tunes create weird and very enchanting music. There are much medieval influences here, but the overall aesthetics are not luckily very idealized or fantasy related, but sincere and realistic, filled with mystery, misery and violence. Music is peaceful but partly disturbing too. "Bluebell" was quite good track, and the last song "Autumn Childhood" is very weird with strange rhythm changes and several parts. "The Midnight Hanging of A Runaway Serf" was also quite affecting in its brutality and realism. "Graveyard" is also very beautiful and quite accessible song, but maybe best of them all is "Gypsy girl & Rambleway", describing a love affair with very raw medieval sounds. Highly recommended! Melbourne's GREY DATURAS camped out in Austin's hi-fi Infinity Recording for one day and borrowed cabinets that nearly reached the ceiling, cooking up 34 minutes of disturbing waves that seemed on the verge of opening the Balcones Fault's limestone and lava. Lots of drone albums loom in the racks, sure. But if you, listener, perceive this long-playing record as whatever drone or doom metal, is, then you, Madame Blahg, are as simple-headed as Bush Jr. doing lines while watching a hurricane on CNN. HAUNTED - Blow my Little Mind to Bits - Label:VOXX LAST COPIES  One of Canada's most popular homegrown rock groups in the '60s, though they made no inroads to the rest of North America. From the English-speaking community of Montreal, the group was very explicit in their desire to emulate the Rolling Stones, and most of their 1966-1968 singles (as well as their sole LP, from 1967) were in a raunchy R&B/blues-rock style.  Their most successful single, "1-2-5," gained fame when it was reissued on one of the first Pebbles compilations of garage singles in the '70s. INDEX - ST -  Label:VOXX Voxx 200.023  LAST COPIES  Formed at the University of Detroit in 1967, Index cut one of the most excruciatingly rare psychedelic albums of all time, pressed in an edition of a mere 100 copies.  Most of the copies of the Index LPs were given away to friends, and the group vanished after the 1960s. It wasn't until the garage/psychedelic revival of the 1980s that Index became known and respected in collector circles, especially after the first album was reissued by Voxx in 1984. MORNING AFTER- BLUE BLOOD -Label:SHADOKS MUSIC 450 numbered / glossy heavy sleeve / engraved artwork / 180 gram pressing. Here we have a completely unknown album from England from 1971. Morning After recorded this LP as a demo only to acquire a record deal (as so many bands did in the late 60s early 70s). So the album was pressed only in tiny amounts. The recording was with home studio equipment. Some of the tracks on the album sound like Blues Rock from the late Fleetwood Mac and some have a more progressive touch such as Shuttah. Great & heavy guitar work, fuzz and wah-wah all over the album, snotty vocals, all own great compositions. The album title Blue Blood assumed a noble wealthy family and a member of the establishment, but the music and lyrics are just the opposite. PRIVACY- Without Mercy One-Sided -Label:ANTHEM “ I had the good fortune of playing a show with LAUREL KNAPP (aka PRIVACY) earlier this year here in SF. Having only met her a couple of hours before the show I really had no Idea what to expect. Probably why I was totally surprised to find my mouth wide open once she got about two minutes into her set. Her gentle singing, which is really more akin to breathing softly and talking at the same time, was, and is on this recording, something to behold. Laurel's dreamy loom may lack the histrionics so fawned over by the kids these days, but I say drama ain't everything. Without Mercy is a captivating collection of monochromatic love blues, tenderly propelled along by smoky acoustic guitar strum and a husky vocal drone. A great testament to minimal space, emotional inversion, and the resonance that a style lacking in so-called technique can produce from simple charisma."-Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. SACROS- ST -Label:SHADOKS MUSIC 450 numbered / glossy heavy sleeve / 180 gram pressing, insert. Sacros ('The Sacred') was a Chilean rock band inspired by the spiritual passion and veneration for the great gods of South America, such as Quetzalcoatl, the Plumed Serpent, god of the ancient Mayas and Viracocha, Lord of Tiahuanaku in the Andes mountains. Sacros recorded the debut LP on the state label IRT and the production was destroyed by the militaries. Only very few copies survived from destruction. The music goes in the same direction as Los Jaivas, Los Blops and El Congreso (all from Chile) and Lula Cortes from Brazil. It has a great 12 string Rickenbacker sounds, effects, great vocals and rhythms with an experimental touch. You can call this easy one of the rarest albums from Latin America since only a handful of copies survived. Patricio Panussis (guitar & vocals) Hernan Valdovinos (bass & vocals) and Tomas R. SIMMONS, JEFF- Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up -Label:WORLD IN SOUND When this album came out in early 1970 it totally flew below the media radar and sank without a trace. Too bad really. Although admittedly not for all tastes, for those of us tuned into Jeff Simmons' passionate, uncompromising, and genre bending vision and execution of expression, "Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up" is truly a singular acheivement.  Revelatory and idiosyncratic both lyrically and musically, it's like nothing that I've ever heard before (or since!).  Lots of interesting musical textures here, supported by cool arrangements and tempo shifts. We also find tight virtuosic ensemble playing with the occasional solo never overstaying it's welcome.  Although not the greatest singer, Simmons brilliance lies in finding just the right character to stand and deliver in each of his quirky pieces.  Whether it be the cosmic lounge crooning of 'Aqueous Humore', the edgy psycho emotive 'Raye', the cooly deadpan observant 'Madame Du Barry', the desparately resigned 'I'm In The Music Business', or the joyfully wailing 'Appian Way', Simmons knows how to populate his surrealistic landscapes.  For me his intuitive sense of fun,abandon, and purpose combined with the kaleidoscopic funhouse-mirrored angular delivery keeps this masterwork as fresh sounding today as much as it was head-scratchingly disturbed almost 38 years ago. Transcendantly exquisite to some or palpably nonsensical to many, "Lucille" remains as one of my personal alltime favorite albums of any category. LP  $30 SKU:7813
