Voxx Records was begun in 1979 as a subsidiary of Bomp Records, as owner Greg Shaw grew more dissatisfied with the direction "new wave" music was taking, and desired to have a label that specialized in '60s styles as a kind of pure root music, to present it in sympathetic and appropriate context, and to encourage the creation of more such music. At the time there wasn't much, but bands like DMZ, the Chesterfield Kings, and Plan 9 had demonstrated the possibilities. In order to spread the gospel, Voxx announced a national "battle of the bands" competition, called Battle of the Garages, that led to the discovery of more bands, and a series of four compilations albums and two national package tours, which did much to promote awareness of the scene.

Thus, before long, nearly every city in the land boasted its own scene devoted to pure '60s garage and psych styles, and as new bands emerged in the genre, Voxx was quick to put them into the studio. By 1987, when the trend peaked, Voxx had already released 50 or more albums. There was also a series of original '60s recordings, licensed from the bands and compiled with the band members, under the title Rough Diamonds. Twelve volumes in this series were eventually issued. During the mid-'80s, Los Angeles enjoyed perhaps the most active garage scene in the world, and Voxx was here to chronicle it. Starting in 1980, we hooked up with Gary Stern's Silvery Moon studios in Hollywood where we produced some of the era's most enduring classics, from the Miracle Workers and Pandoras to the Tell-Tale Hearts, Eyes of Mind, Fourgiven, Gravedigger V, SS-20, and far too many more to mention. We also released albums by bands from afar afield as Germany, England, France, Spain, Italy and Sweden, plus of course the burgeoning scenes in New York and elsewhere.

Some of the Voxx albums have since gone out of print, but the best have been reissued on CD, often with bonus tracks, and most of the original vinyl is also available because we all know it's cooler!

All the great VOXX albums and info will be back up on the site very soon. For now check out all the releases currently available
