COPE, JULIAN- Black Sheep 2CD ( pop psych ) -Label:HEAD HERITAGE BLACK SHEEP is Julian Cope's new album for 2008CE, and is a musical exploration of what it is to be an outsider in modern Western Culture. Across 11 songs and one epic poem, Cope examines the idea of social outcasts and how they - through their sheer obstinacy and strength of personality - carve a path for themselves in the normal world, often changing society's own concepts of normality in the process. On BLACK SHEEP, Cope attributes his personal descent into outsider-dom to his 9th birthday on which 116 children his own age died in the infamous Aberfan Disaster. Cope also asserts that the West has been rigorously directed towards the outsider concept, first by the rejected Black Sheep prophet Jesus Christ, whose own people ignored his revelation, and secondly by St. Paul, another Black Sheep whose singular take on Christianity has come down to us through the Roman Empire. Available on two half-hour-long CDs, the 11 songs of BLACK SHEEP reveal Cope at a pinnacle of songwriting and feature sumptuous lashings of orchestral Mellotron, orchestral percussion and marching bass drums, plus oboe, wah guitar, rumbling synthesizers and gorgeous harmony vocals. The front cover depicts International Anarchist flag and C.G. Jung quote hand-painted in oil-on-canvas by Cope himself. CD $19 SKU:9775

RADIO MOSCOW - Brain Cycles ALIVE ( psych- prod by Dan of the Black Keys ) -
"Brain Cycles" is Radio Moscow's second album, a new psychedelic trip into the musical territory originally charted by artists such as Randy Holden, Groundhogs, Peter Green and Flower Travellin' Band, just to name a few. Hailing from Ames, Iowa, an unlikely rock n'roll town if there was one, and formed in 2006 by guitar prodigy Parker Griggs, Radio Moscow released their self-titled debut in 2007, with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys handling the production. Stoner Rock called the album "an astonishingly good debut," Pop Matters hailed it as an "awesome record-...fun and slutty and cool," and Modern Fix described their sound as "dirty-ass psych-powered blues rock ". After a full year on the road, Parker Griggs has headed back into the studio to cut the long awaited follow-up. On "Brain Cycles," he once again plays all the instruments (guitar, drums, and percussion) and assumes vocal duties as well as production credits, while the bass guitar is in the hands of young Zach Anderson. Conceived as an homage to the thrilling days of yesteryear, when vinyl was king and analog stereo ruled the world, "Brain Cycles" is a guilty pleasure best experienced at maximum volume while wearing headphones, if you want your brain to catch the waves! CD $11

CRASS- Best Before 1984 ( English punk ) DBL LP -Label:Crass Best Before 1984 is a compilation of Crass' singles and other tracks, released in 1986, including lyrics and a booklet ("...In Which Crass Voluntarily 'Blow Their Own'") which details the history of the band in their own words. The album was named in reference to the notion that 1984 was the band's 'sell by date', the year that they had often publicly stated that they would split up. Indeed the band ceased gigging and recording in that year. LP $17 SKU:9659

HENRY’S FUNERAL SHOE- Everything's For Sale - ( great UK guitar psych) w. bonus CD) -Label:Alive Great primitive psychedelic blues from Welsh brothers Aled and Brennig Clifford. Aled is an inspired guitarist who has worked as a session man for producer Ian Grimble, and even recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios. He is also a powerful singer in the tradition of Noddy Holder, Fogerty, Tony McPhee. etc. His younger brother Brennig has been playing the drums since he was nine and brings a punk spirit to their sound. Aled and Brennig come from a family of musicians, their uncle was even asked to join the legendary sixties Welsh band Man as lead singer. If you're into Buffalo Killers, Radio Moscow, Black Keys and Black Diamond Heavies, you'll probably dig these guys. LP $12 SKU:9782

O VOIDS - S/T ( Post punk ) ltd ed. -Label: Troubleman Unlimited Fourteen new songs from Montreal-based band the O VOIDS. “O Voids is probably the 1st band outta Montreal I've heard this year. POCAHAUNTED - Passage ( drone pop noise ) ltd ed -Label:Troubleman Unlimited The latest from Los Angeles/New York drone/pop/noise duo POCAHAUNTED. Limited edition of 500 copies, so don’t sleep. LP $16 SKU:9778

STRANGE BOYS- And Girls Club ( lofi pop punk ) -Label:IN THE RED Austin, TX's The Strange Boys evoke a wild-eyed, porcelain-skinned innocence that is capable of summoning the wayward spirit of Brian Jones. The mystery of the South couples with the mastery of rhythm to create a sound completely timeless and familiar, yet absolutely raw and avant-garde. Greg Enlow's syncopated, organ-driven grooves hark back to The Seeds pushing too hard while guitarist Ryan Sambol's voice wavers beyond comparison. Older brother Philip Sambol keeps the pulse with the aptly named Matt Hammer, who unmercifully pounds an old Ludwig set.The band's proper debut album is seeing the light of day. It's easy to imagine The Strange Boys and Girls Club, a sixteen-track beast, blasting out of any stereo system between The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and Wire's Pink Flag. LP $12 SKU:9759

TAMARYN- Led Astray Washed Ashore ( post punk ) -Label: Troubleman Unlimited Somber and seductive, brooding and atmospheric, TAMARYN’s debut EP is filled with the kind of shimmering songs that alto chanteuses like NICO and SIOUXSIE SIOUX offered us in years past. Her voice is both a weight against the current of reverb-drenched guitars and a floating ornament atop the driving drums that underpin her songs. The music hovers between dark, tribal minimalism and lush post-punk grandiosity, infusing the familiar with the unexpected. Led Astray, Washed Ashore is an intriguing release to say the least.”--Big Takeover. Includes guest appearances from NICK ZINNER (YEAH YEAH YEAHS) and JALELL BUNTON (TV ON THE RADIO). Edition of 500 copies. Packaged with embossed sleeves. LP $16 SKU:9779

TELESCOPES - # Untitled Second - first US release w/3 bonus tracks WHITE VINYL ( psych rock shoegaze) - Label:BOMP The Telescopes were among the most innovative and challenging yet successful artists in Creation Records' "middle period", a leading part of the wave of sonic experimenters who included Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, Spectrum and Spiritualized. Towards the end of their time with Creation, they made their most fully realized album yet, "#' (untitled second). This is the first time this great psychedelic album is being released in the US, and it comes with 3 bonus tracks. "The songs are built on acoustic guitars, then the tricked-out electric guitars are laid on top and garnished with bongos, organs, pianos, and all sorts of classic instruments. Stephen Lawrie's vocals are restrained and semi-emotional and female backing vocals add a touch of sweetness that might otherwise be missing from the record, as the overall atmosphere is very moody and introspective." - AMG LP $11 SKU:9772

ZOLA JESUS- Tsar Bomba ( lofi noise pop ) ltd ed.- Label:Troubleman Unlimited On Zola Jesus’ upcoming EP Tsar Bomba, the local project’s bleak pop sensibility stays afloat on a lake polluted with white noise, dirty industrial rhythms, and hissing synthesizers. The spooky vibrato of Madison vocalist NIKA DANILOVA effectively throws the dreamy hooks of Ronnie Spector down an empty well. In live sets, DEAD LUKE’s sonically haunting synthesizers crawl over the minimalist rhythm section of bassist LINDSAY MIKKOLA and tom-tom player MAX ELLIOT to provide an adequate backdrop for Danilova’s heaving vibrato and sinister shrieking.”--Madison Decider. Edition of 500 copies. LP $16 SKU:9780

BLOOD GROOP- Evolution Blues (LIME SPIDERS frontman- garage pop ) - Label:OFF THE HIP Mick Blood is best known as the iconic frontman/ singer/songwriter for the LIME SPIDERS. According to Juice magazine in Nov ’04, “Mick Blood has a knack verging on genius for penning three minute garage gems”Mick Blood has finally decided that two guitars just isn’t enough and the explosion of sound on this recording is courtesy of Julian Poulsen (Moler, Stiff Kittens, Green Mist), Andrew Kentler (Glide, Gamma Rays) and Ollie Laurie (Exotics, Hoss). Completing this superb line up is the awesome rythmn section of Pete Leeming on bass & the hired gun of Michael “Kaos” Glenn on drums. CD $12 SKU:9609

KITS- Primitive Tales (Aussie Saints/Sonics style garage ) - Label:DIRTY WATER Drawing comparisons with THE SAINTS, GANG OF FOUR and THE SONICS, THE KITS' tales of crime, addiction and short-lived romances have resulted in a rapturous UK following and earned them recent supports with THE DIRTBOMBS, WOLFMOTHER, THE SAINTS and THE NIGHTMARCHERS. A garage rock'n'roll band at heart, THE KITS have taken the stomp and grit of the '50s and '60s and given it the injection of eternal youth through relentless guitar hooks and snarling vocals.
Primitive Tales delivers blow after blow of driving material which showcases for the first time now permanent members Marc Bonet from Spain and Michael Cleverly from New Zealand. CD $12 SKU:9608

LOOP- Fade Out DBL CD ( 80s UK Primal Psych ) -Label:REACTOR Heaven's End and Fade Out are the first two releases in a series of long-overdue reissues by British primal psych band Loop. The band was formed in London in 1986 by Robert Hampson on guitar and vocals and Beki Stewart (Bex) on drums. After finding bassist Glen Ray, Loop signed to Head Records, run by Jeff Barrett (Heavenly), and released the feedback-drenched 12-inch, 16 Dreams. With the arrival of James Endeacott on second guitar, drummer John Wills, and bassist Neil MacKay, Loop adopted a more primal, rhythmic approach and put out their debut full-length, 1987's Heavens End. The band hypnotized all with their discordant, trance-like spell which served as an antidote to the prevailing trends in British pop at the time; they resurrected the concept of loud, out-there rock for a new era, creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance loosely influenced by The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The MC5, but retaining the avant-garde and experimental edge of Can, Faust, Neu!, Rhys Chatham, Glenn Branca, and minimalist systems music. Live shows were revelatory-- Loop pushed PAs to the very limit, delivering a sonic pummel that has yet to be experienced since. A collection of singles and B-sides, The World in Your Eyes, appeared in 1987, after which the band signed to the Chapter 22 label and released the 12-inch Collision and their second full-length, Fade Out. Following another label change, another second guitarist, Scott Dowson, and a final album, A Gilded Eternity, the band disbanded in 1990 after four years. Remastered from the original analog sources, these two out-of-print albums are housed in vinyl-style card sleeves, reproducing the original artwork. Both have been expanded to double discs with a wealth of extra material-- original mixes, demos, and Peel Session cuts-- from the relevant chronological time frame, and are also available digitally for the first time. TEENAGE JESUS & THE JERKS- Shut Up and Bleed - Label:CHERRY RED (UK): “”The seminal no-wave band Teenage and Jesus and The Jerks were lead by primal screamer and guitarist Lydia Lunch, an individual who has fought her artistic way through the decades, always true to her own vision and always brutally honest. The resulting recording, entitled No New York and produced by Eno, remains as one of the most impressive and extraordinarily bold debuts of the time. Here we compiled all Teenage Jesus and The Jerks recordings, alongside some NEVER previously released live material. Simultaneous to Teenage Jesus, Lunch formed Beirut Slump, released one single and recorded an albums worth of material, which is also included on this remarkable release” CD $19 SKU:8670

FILE UNDER MALE VOCAL- VA - Label:PSYCHIC CIRCLE (UK) The Golden Age of the Beat Balladeer. After enjoying countless compilation albums of psych, beat, garage, girl groups, instrumentals, soul, exotica etc., the Psychic Circle label now releases a compilation which concentrates on that most popular of '60s phenomena, the British male vocalist. These are great tracks and performances that can't really be considered beat, soul or psych, but at the same time conjure a similar sort of mental image. Solid, classy songs performed by great singers which readily evoke the sense of excitement and freshness prevalent in that decade. As legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond) expounds, "What I was trying to assemble for this album was a selection of quality male vocal, with a kind of pop/beat feel. The kind of thing you might have heard in any London discotheque alongside the beat groups, the Stateside soul-sounds, the groovy girls and burgeoning psych riffs. Nothing too MOR or fey, just cool guys doing what they did best. I reckon it's a long overdue examination of a hitherto overlooked genre. It doesn't really need a label, but if you want to give it one, just file under - male vocal." Artists include: Mickey Clarke, Jason Cord, Gerry Deville, Dominic Grant, Nicholas Hammond, Christian Ward, Graham Bell, Jerry Page, Dane Hunter, Brian Keith, Keith Powell, Don Adams, Neil Landon, Greg Hunter, Dave Walton, Danny Street, Dorian Gray, Rudi Bennett, Ronnie Jones, and James Royal. AXEMEN- Big Cheap Motel" - Label:Siltbreeze Siltbreeze joins Sleek Bott Industries for a series of vinyl-only releases from New Zealand's legendary AXEMEN. (LITTLE) STEVIE MCCABE, BOB BRANNIGAN and STU KAWOWSKI have recorded decade's worth of priceless tuneage, some of which, it only seems fair, should finally see the light on a format suited to their chutzpah. The first one out of the gate is the trio's 1983 Big Cheap Motel, their difficult third album, their protest album (following the blistering, insane, and completely live debut Equinox and the studio / live tribute to punk-dub-beer-noise-cubism, Mick's Dancefloor (Mix)). Rarely heard outside the Southern Hemisphere, this montage of rough-and-ready live performances and Peterboro Studio recordings teeters on the precipice of chaotic genius alongside such stalwarts as Alternative TV / Hear & Now's What You See Is What You Are and 1/2 Japanese's Loud. One-time pressing of 500. LP $15 SKU:9671

BELL, Chris - I Am The Cosmos 180 gram (70s pop)- Label:4 Men With Beards BIG STAR guitarist CHRIS BELL was one of the unsung heroes of American pop music; despite a life marked by tragedy and a career crippled by commercial indifference, the singer/songwriter's slim body of recorded work proved massively influential on the generations of indie rockers who emerged in his wake. Lyrically poignant and melodically stunning, this lone solo album is proof positive of his underappreciated pop mastery. 180-gram vinyl. LP $18 SKU:5184

BLACK TIME- Double Negative ( UK Garage Punk ) -Label:IN THE RED London's Black Time have carved a hefty reputation for themselves over the past few years through scattered tours across Europe and the US, numerous limited-edition 7-inch records, two dense yet danceable long-player albums, and a manifesto that, among other things, espouses "fuck and rage" and the "heavy vampire sound."

Double Negative is the latest full-length in the Black Time canon. Fans of the band's previous output will not be disappointed, especially if they want to hear the fractured, art-damaged scree of their singles forged with the trebly garage punk of their two albums. The trio of Lemmy Caution, Janie Too Bad, and Mr. Stix outdo themselves here and turn in the most fully realized Black Time release to date. If you've been aching for Messthetics and Back From The Grave compilations, then look no further. Double Negative is the absinthe you've been wanting to drink.

Known for their propensity for all things black, Black Time carries their theme of bleak darkness to the nth degree. With tracks like "Skeleton Factory," "Blot Out The Sun," "Little Death," and "I'm Gonna Haunt You When I'm Gone" (featuring lead vox by Janie), you know you're in for the feel-bad record of the year.

Watch for Black Time to spread their bad vibes on their East Coast tour in Fall '08.

Not for the faint-hearted at all, this is extreme rock 'n' roll at maximum; if you can listen to this twice in a row then you are extremely sick in the head. --Piccadilly Records

Performed and recorded with a technical finesse that makes Billy Childish sound like David Gilmour. --AMG

Black Time makes labelmates Pussy Galore and the Black Lips sound positively polished by comparison. --LA Weekly

MILK N' COOKIES- ST DBL LP ( 70s glam powerpop )- Label:Radio Heartbeat This is the definitive version of the 1975 Glam-Pop classic! The complete LP on one record and 6 studio bonus cuts on the 2nd LP. Influenced by Sparks, Roxy Music and Sweet; these Woodmere Long Island boys (Justin Strauss, Ian North, Sal Maida and Mike Ruiz) were flown out to England to record this masterpiece of starstruck teenage anthems. Released at the wrong time and with barely any record co. help, this brilliant record couldn't get a foothold at the time. The time is finally now, with Milk N' Cookies popping up as major influences for bands like The Busy Signals, Cheap Time, NoBunny, Baby Shakes and The Pets and recently getting the front cover treatment from pop-obsessed mag Rock Mania. Due to the renewed interest, Radio Heartbeat has pulled out all the stops, going for a deluxe gatefold with an 11x17 full color repro of the original promo poster! Mastered for vinyl to perfection by James Flames, this thing sounds ridiculously good on new vinyl and the second record spins at 45rpm for maximum fidelity! LP $26 SKU:8699

SCORCES- I Turn Into You DBL LP LTD to 500 ( Texas Psych ) SSALe -Label:DIGITALIS ***Very few fringe duos of the 2000s have succeeded in so fully utilizing the witchy, wordless, and wondrous bond of the twosome formation as SCORCES' twin figureheads CHRISTINA CARTER (CHARALAMBIDES, BASTARD WING) and HEATHER LEIGH MURRAY (TAURPIS TULA). Their early incarnation as East Texas fried-folk loners instantly struck a chord in clued-in heads for both its bold formless experimental moods as well its instantly gripping emotional power. I Turn Into You features nearly 70 minutes of pedal-steel guitar tendrils, basement dust, whispered melodies, enchanted strings thrummed against the quiet, and possibly the planet's single most intense dual free-crooning chemistry sprawled across four spectral sides of black vinyl. All tracks were recorded several years ago back at Charalambides HQ in Houston, TX by psych-guitar journeyman TOM CARTER, and they've aged like oil paintings (cracking, majestic, immense). Housed in embossed, metallic ink jackets designed by MARCIA BASSETT (with a racy poem by the Scorces' ladies on the back), plus an 11"x11" insert with info and a live shot. Edition of 500. LP $24 SKU:8672

STUMPS- SPLIT FLEET DODGE LTD ED (New zealand noise rock ) sALE -Label:PALINDROME This what could be called "prototypically New Zealand" 2006 album by Seht, Antony Milton, and James Kirk (from Sandoz Lab Technicians, Black Bones Angel, and Wisher Table-era Gate) peppers its laid-back blown-out noise rock with free jazz drum splatter that careens haphazardly over thick slabs of distant distorted riffage. Guest appearance by Cambell Kneale (aka Birchville Cat Motel) on wild, disembodied prog keyboards and electronics that that swirl and wobble. 300 copies on black vinyl, almost sold out. Imported from New Zealand LP $16 SKU:8041

SUBHUMANS - Death Was Too Kind ( First Wave Punk ) -Label:ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES Subhumans and DOA were the two pillars of the Vancouver, BC, Canada punk scene who caught Jello Biafra's attention and were spotlighted in the landmark Alternative Tentacles compilation Let Them Eat Jellybeans. The Subhumans, first active between 1978 and 1982, were the more elusive of the two, with many out-of-print releases fetching bank on eBay and making it difficult for present-day fans to connect the dots. Now, the Subhumans join the Alternative Tentacles "Reissues of Necessity" pantheon with Death Was Too Kind, a collection of material from the early years, lovingly remastered from original source material: the very first single Death to the Sickoids (only 500 were pressed); the Firing Squad single; the self-titled EP produced by Bob Rock, who went on to work with Metallica, The Cult, Offspring, etc.; "Look at the Dawn" and "Pissed Off. With Good Reason," two virtually lost songs (only available on the 1996 collection CD released by Essential Noise in Canada), especially remastered for this reissue from the original tapes by Jesse Gander at Hive Stu dios. Death Was Too Kind features the bands best-known lineup with Wimpy Roy, Gerry Useless, Mike Graham, Dimwit, and Jim Imagawa. LP $14 SKU:9190

VIVIAN GIRLS- ST ( Shoegaze / Punk ) -Label:IN THE RED The Vivian Girls drop sweet girl-group melodies into proto-shoegaze squalls the way the Jesus & Mary Chain used to and the way groups like the Aislers Set, C86s-ers the Shop Assistants, and the Manhattan Love Suicides have done with female vocalists. They keep the Shangri-Las' melodrama to boot." // Pitchfork

As recounted in songs by Comet Gain and Walker Kong, the "Vivian Girls" are the seven sisters who feature in Henry Darger's posthumously published fantasy epic, The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. Tribute has also been paid by everyone from poet John Ashberry to Sufjan Stevens, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Camper Van Beethoven, Fucked Up, the Residents' Snakefinger, and ex-Maniac Natalie Merchant--and now by Brooklyn noise-pop band the Vivian Girls.

With their debut 7-inch on their very own Plays With Dolls Records already sending out waves of panic and adoration to the outer limits of the underground pop contingent, the Girls have become the newest breakout sirens of the New York loft-pop brigade. Within seconds of hearing their seductive three-part vocal harmonies lushly interwoven with chest-pounding waves of beautiful feedback, it's obvious that their songs are hard to resist, especially if you find yourself keen on the mid-'80s noise pop trifecta of The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Vaselines, and the Shop Assistants.

The Vivian Girls' self-titled debut album appeared recently on Mauled By Tigers Records in a vinyl-only edition of 500 which sold out before the band had completed their recent three-week US tour. In The Red now proudly presents the re-release of this essential pop platter in both vinyl and compact disc formats. Swirling noise topped with sweetly angelic vocals is practically a can't-miss concoction, so expect your fruity neighbors and your attention-starved friends to chime in with unabashed praise when you spin this record. LP $13 SKU:9068

WHO- THE WHO SELL OUT plus 10” Label:VINYL LOVERS The Whos legendary third album, released in 1967, was a concept album of songs made into advertisements, with the cover art featuring members of the band pretending to endorse various products. WHO, THE- WHO SELL OUT dbl lp -Label:VINYL LOVERS An almost accidental acid rock masterpiece, this is the Who's capable, but light-hearted answer to Hendrix and Sgt. Pepper's. Townshend used cute little link tracks, such as BBC promotional spots, to paste together crafted singles (the acid rock masterpiece "I Can See For Miles"; "I Can't Reach You"), psychedelic indulgences ("Armenia"), comedy numbers ("Odorono"; the almost-serious "Tattoo"), and half-baked studio experiments ("Rael," which was partially recycled for Tommy). The result is a blast, and it's guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. The second side drags a bit, though, despite the magnificent, painfully sincere acoustic ballad "Sunrise." LP $38 SKU:7794
