If you think you've heard all the great electric guitar styles in the world, think again. This Saharan sand-blizzard of fine-crushed glass will grind your face to a bloody pulp. Group Doueh play raw and unfiltered Saharawi music from the former colonial Spanish outpost of the Western Sahara. Doueh (pronounced "Doo-way") is their leader and a master of the electric guitar. He's been performing since he was a child playing in many groups before finally creating his own in the 1980s. Doueh says he's influenced by Western pop and rock music especially Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. HOLMES, JAKE- The Above Ground Sound -Label:PHOENIX RECORDS When U.S. folk-rock singer/songwriter Jake Holmes opened for The Yardbirds in New York in August 1967, little did he suspect that one of his songs, "Dazed And Confused," would be "commandeered" by guitarist Jimmy Page and become one of his next band's major live showpieces. The band in question is, of course, Led Zeppelin, and although The Yardbirds did incorporate the song into their live set, it is the Led Zep version that provided Holmes with his 15 minutes of fame. Mr. Page, clearly suffering from a temporary bout of amnesia, forgetfully claimed the songwriting credit himself. Holmes had done the rounds of the New York folk scene, working in bands with the likes of Tim Rose before going solo. This, his first recording, originally appeared on the Tower label in 1967. The album is considered a folk-rock masterpiece, and was described at the time as "a songwriter, three guitars and a mirror." The guitars of Holmes and Ted Irwin (later to play with Elliot Murphy, Roy Buchanan and various country singers) are the only backing for Holmes' voice and the 10 short tracks are outstanding, but especially the sparer, stripped-down original version of "Dazed And Confused." Never has Skullflower sounded so severe or remorseless. Utech Records has invoked a connate soul in visual artist Stephen Kasner to develop a second fine art series of CD releases for the label. The series will comprise nine volumes of 750 copies each over the course of 2008 beginning in April. Kasner has committed the bulk of his next outputs to painting original and exclusive canvases. His subject matter has yet to be disclosed, but the artist has spoken in general terms of a new direction he wants to explore in his work. A package unique to the series has been designed to highlight Kasner's residuum and the accompanying music. The foundation of the series is the belief that a visual device can bind a disparate body of music in a meaningful way. The genesis of this idea was first explored with photographer Max Aguilera-Hellweg in 2007 and the result was Utech Record's acclaimed Arc Series. LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- African Psychedelic Music - Label:QDK GERMANY This is volume eight of the Love, Peace & Poetry series. Many records on this compilation are from South Africa, but it also covers countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. As in the other six volumes of this series the tracks are only taken from rare LP's and some fetches prices over $1500 for an original. The biggest problem with original records from African countries are finding them in good condition. The turntables where very very poor and the hot and humid climate does not preserve records very good. Sometimes termites eaten away complete record covers. In addition earthquakes, sandstorms, floods, wars, revolutions and other heavy influences made it hard to release albums and keep them in good shape since the late 60's. All this makes this compilation very special beside the amazing good music. LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- Mexican Psychedelic Music - Label:QDK GERMANY The most recent volume of the Love, Peace & Poetry series, Mexican Psychedelic Music, takes as its focus what was one aspect of our second collection in this series, Latin American Psychedelic Music. While there are some parallels between the evolution of rock and roll in the US and Mexico, the stories are out of synch with each other in interesting ways. In the US, the first wave of rock and roll presented a challenge to longstanding racial divisions and repressed sexuality that was fought off (by 1960 Elvis was in the Army, Jerry Lee Lewis in exile, Chuck Berry in prison and Little Richard turned to Jesus) and replaced by the mostly bland and neutered pop of singers like Fabian, Dion, Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon and Pat Boone (if you've ever wonder what music might sound like in Hell listen to Pat Boone's covers of Little Richard; possibly the most frightening music ever made). The history of Mexican pop music remains calm and fairly controversy free through the 1950s and into the late 1960s. The economic prosperity that fueled the Baby Boom generation in the United States didn't exist for Mexican youth, nor was Mexico as racially volatile or sexually repressed. In the 1950's the culture of the United States was far more shook up by Elvis and his gyrating army than was Mexico. Rock and roll became dangerous in Mexico when it began to be mixed with a challenge to the political status quo. Tracks from rare LPs by The Flying Karpets, Grupo Ciruela, Los Ovnis, La Onda De Survival, and Nahuatl help complete our tour through the various climates of 1960s-1970s Mexican psychedelia, and readily demonstrate the origins of a musical culture that continues on into contemporary times in the many bands that make up the active Mexican music scene here in the new century COMPCD $19 SKU:8121

HILLAGE, STEVE- Live in England 1979 -Label:F - Minor Steve Hillage first came to prominence as a member of the multi national rock band Gong. Steve appeared on successful albums such as Angels Egg, You and his final album with the band Shamal. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled Fish Rising This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System Seven. In 1976 Steve recorded the album "L" with Todd Rundgren producing. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the Steve Hillage Band which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976. Following the live debut the band played numerous live concerts including a concert in Germany in early 1977 for German television. This performance is now available on DVD as Steve Hillage Live in Germany. Following this tour the original line up of the Steve Hillage band broke up and Steve and Miquette recorded further albums such as Motivation Radio and Green with different line ups of the Steve Hillage Band. In late 1978 the band released a live album entitled Live Herald and toured in support of that album. In early 1979 Steve embarked on another British tour that took in a date at his old university in Kent. This concert was filmed for television. This British tour was to be the last tour undertaken by the Steve Hillage Band as Steve moved into studio work and production which continues to this day alongside his work both live and in the studio with his System Seven project. FARQUHAR, J.W.- FORMALE FEMALE -Label:SHADOKS MUSIC 450 numbered / glossy heavy sleeve / 180 gram pressing All tracks where recorded by JW Farquhar in 1972. The songs on THE FORMAL FEMALE were written as an outcry against the materialistic nature of the woman during that time period in 1972. Many will tell you it is still that way. JW had recently extricated himself from a 10 year marriage and the words from this experience fit the lyrics on the album still. During that time he lived by himself in a 3rd floor apartment in Philadelphia. It was a street with a lot of traffic. Car horns, busses, police sirens, fire engines, screams, and sometimes even gunshots filled the airwaves. For this reason he sealed up the windows and any other openings with sound proofing foam. This was necessary because his music was recorded in there. JW was the instrumentalist; rhythm guitar, lead guitar, drums, vocals, and bass. However he could not play them all at once, so he purchased a four track simulsync Teac recorder ..professional version. This allowed him to record on one track and then play it back and separately record on a second, third, and fourth track. The original tracks were recorded at 15 IPS. A final mix was then made in stereo with yet a fifth overdub, when needed. At that time other effects were limited. It is amazing electric fuzz album full of effects and it's an masterpiece such as D.R. Hooker. Extra heavy psychedelic. LP $45 SKU:8068

Mushroom Palace is Dreu Ferguson Sr. and Brian Hullit's collaboration into the psychedelic folk blues dimension. Hulitts words and Fergusons guitar establish the album from the beginning with title cut "Mushroom Palace", a drug lyric upbeat rocker complete with laughter, subtle background effects and strangeness, followed by the 60's sound of "The Essence" which is a psychedelic chant put to music complete with whispers, druggy references, 60's guitar etc.Then comes the killer electric guitar cut "Maelstrom" with great lyric and guitar playing. As the album evolves into more of a folk blues direction, great cuts "Without a Face" and "History Following Me" stand out. The humorous rocker "Bad Weather Mama" is also a fun spot. There is a Dylan esque cut "If I Disappeared Today" and spoken word cut "Words of Whispers" complete with a tape loop and backwards guitar! Not too forget the 60's pop sound of "Price of Love"(Hey is this an old Monkee?) and the drug chant "Painting", Mushroom Palace" is an ambitious effort qualifying for inclusion in several genres. A two man effort, the album has a private underground feel to it throughout which contributes to it's charm. Lyrically fantastic, Hulitt exorcizes demons of drugs,the bottle, women and death,culminating in the hopeful and beautiful "Even If". Ferguson's guitar playing is on target throughout with a nice touch of the throbbing wahwah on "Easy Prey To Time" and dobro on "History Following Me". FOREST- FULL CIRCLE -Label:TIMELESS This album has both brutal and beautiful elements, and the raw acoustic tunes create weird and very enchanting music. There are much medieval influences here, but the overall aesthetics are not luckily very idealized or fantasy related, but sincere and realistic, filled with mystery, misery and violence. Music is peaceful but partly disturbing too. "Bluebell" was quite good track, and the last song "Autumn Childhood" is very weird with strange rhythm changes and several parts. "The Midnight Hanging of A Runaway Serf" was also quite affecting in its brutality and realism. "Graveyard" is also very beautiful and quite accessible song, but maybe best of them all is "Gypsy girl & Rambleway", describing a love affair with very raw medieval sounds. Highly recommended! Morning After recorded this LP as a demo only to acquire a record deal (as so many bands did in the late 60s early 70s). So the album was pressed only in tiny amounts. The recording was with home studio equipment. Some of the tracks on the album sound like Blues Rock from the late Fleetwood Mac and some have a more progressive touch such as Shuttah. Great & heavy guitar work, fuzz and wah-wah all over the album, snotty vocals, all own great compositions. The album title Blue Blood assumed a noble wealthy family and a member of the establishment, but the music and lyrics are just the opposite. SACROS- ST -Label:SHADOKS MUSIC 450 numbered / glossy heavy sleeve / 180 gram pressing, insert. Sacros ('The Sacred') was a Chilean rock band inspired by the spiritual passion and veneration for the great gods of South America, such as Quetzalcoatl, the Plumed Serpent, god of the ancient Mayas and Viracocha, Lord of Tiahuanaku in the Andes mountains. Sacros recorded the debut LP on the state label IRT and the production was destroyed by the militaries. Only very few copies survived from destruction. The music goes in the same direction as Los Jaivas, Los Blops and El Congreso (all from Chile) and Lula Cortes from Brazil. It has a great 12 string Rickenbacker sounds, effects, great vocals and rhythms with an experimental touch. DOWNLINERS SECT - ROSES - Label:PENNIMAN After releasing the first and last recordings by the Sect -a honour that we do not deserve-, as well as the band's debut single, here we have another gem from their impressive catalogue from the 60s: a special edition, with picture sleeve, of their mega-rare Pye single from 1967 featuring "Roses", one of their best tracks, plus a cover version of the Remains' "I Can't Get Away From You" on the flip. Neither "Roses" nor "I Can't " have been included in any of the Sect's recent compilations and were never re-released in their original 7" single format. This 45 was originally released after the original Sect disbanded and Don Craine tried to revive the band with a new line-up (featuring Matthew Fisher, soon to be the organist of Procol Harum), imaginatively renaming the group "Don Craine's New Downliners Sect". LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- Japanese Psych Music- Label:QDK GERMANY Fourth volume in this phenomenal series of compilations focusing on the weirdest and most uncommon records from the late 60s/early 70s. After volumes of American (QDK 021), Latin American (QDK 022) and Asian (QDK 029) obscurities, here comes Japan. "Right up front I think it's only right to note that anyone allergic to heavily distorted blues-based psychedelic lead guitar may very well not survive this disc. Japanese psychedelic music of the 1960s & 1970s is very heavily invested in a hard rock aesthetic and much of what we've chosen to include here features some phenomenal over the top electric guitar excess. Many Japanese records from this period are either very heavy psychedelic rock, or they are very experimental and avant garde with little in the way of classic UK & US Sixties 'underground' psychedelia to be found. As a result, while Japan and the United Kingdom released a comparable number of records during this period, there are a great many rare and expensive Japanese records that remain virtually unknown on this side of the globe. A few of the top rarities are only now finding their way to these shores. The LP by Ceremony creates a musical trip based upon a Buddhist mass, employing exotic instruments and building to a guitar assault but is impossible to really excerpt a small piece of for our purposes here. Only two or three Japanese collectors own the $4,000 original album. My American and European friends who have visited Japan almost unanimously describe the experience as what they imagine visiting another planet might be like. A very friendly and inviting planet, but disorientingly different in many ways. I think what they are describing is really the experience of a first encounter with a non-Western culture and imagine the experience of a Japanese traveler's first encounter with, for example, Arizona or New Mexico, would resemble an even greater interplanetary experience. Although highly influential to other R&B and Mod bands of the time, the Graham Bond Organisation had little commercial success back then. The band, who featured also Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce (both to form Cream with Eric Clapton just one year later), recorded 2 LPs. this one being their first, at a time when albums were considered just like an extra for the fan; today, both highly collectable, they are regarded as milestones of the early British Rhythm and Blues scene and a must for any lover of Mod sounds. Alexy Rodriguez, who was a musician of The Challengers and who designed the cover for Final Solution could not locate an original album to master from. Many years later a well-known collector had the luck of finding a near mint original copy which was the basis of this reissue. Really strong guitar and organ based garage sound, rough and beautiful at the same time. Mostly male vocals, all original 12 songs, English lyrics. NEW AGE (PAT KILROY, SUSAN GRAUBARD- ALL AROUND - Label:RED LOUNGE recordings in this genre and hitherto unreleased After the release of the "Light of Day" album in 1966 the now legendary Pat Kilroy and Susan Graubard went on with playing and creating music together. What you hear on this album is what they recorded for Warner Brothers in the summer of 1967, a true groundbreaking adventure of the highest order. They expanded in the direction they started in 1966 and the result is far beyond and superior to everything I heard from that time period before in this musical style except for Tim Buckley. No wonder that it didn't come out at that time because those recordings were for sure far too adventureous for Warner Brothers and also for almost other leading music companies at the time. Incredible - and I mean INCREDIBLE raga influenced Psychedelic/Acid Folk with some of the best songwriting I know of with monstrous lyrics and deep lead vocals. Also a wide range of instruments were played like incredible raga-esque acoustic guitar, electric bass, Spanish cowbells, bell tree, silver flute, bamboo flutes, viola, tamboura, conga drums, tables, acoustic and electric bass and tambourine. Pat Kilroy sadly died of Hodgkins disease in December of 1967 at a very young age. If this record had a proper release at the time, it would be a major classic and a milestone today in the psychedelic history book.
