Since 1978, this Bomp-affiliated
label has been assembling compilations of punk, psych, beat,
garage, and related obscurities. Some of these albums still exist
only on vinyl, many are out of print. With a few exceptions,
the label's output falls into one of these discrete series
Pebbles
Originally an overview
of American garage rock, the series expanded in later volumes
to include some foreign scenes. In the CD series, a new emphasis
on regional scenes has been taken.
Planetary
Pebbles
A series of collections
of far-out sounds--literally! Surf and beat from behind the Iron
Curtain, rareties from Latin America, and so on.
Essential
Pebbles
A series of 2-CD overviews,
one disc featuring highlights from previously-released Pebbles
volumes (mainly vinyl) and the other with never-before-reissued
classics. A great bargain for beginners and veteran collectors
alike.
Highs
in the Mid-Sixties
A secondary series
to supplement the original Pebbles albums with a more regional
approach. These tracks are integrated within the new CD releases,
rendering this series superfluous; however, note that the original
albums contain many tracks which were passed over in compiling
the CDs. And, of course, many of the regions covered in this
series have yet to see a Pebbles CD devoted to them.
English
Freakbeat
Devoted to some of
the more raw & rockin' UK nuggets that have been overlooked
by England's more pop-obsessed compilers. An emphasis on punk
and R&B but with some volumes leaning toward modbeat and
art-pop.
Electric
Sugarcube Flashbacks
This series targets
the extreme psychedelic edge of British '60s esoterica.
All the great AIP albums and info will be back up on the site very soon.
