FEATURED ITEMS: FOLK

JESSE HECTOR - And the Gatecrashers - Carolina 4 Song EP on Clear Vinyl -Label:ROCKIN HOUSE  Legendary Gorillas front-man brings his proto punk glam masterclass to your stereo.   Produced by Liam Watson  Jesse Hector deserves our undivided attention , if only for the fact that he was vocalist for original English working class noisemeisters Crushed Butler in the early '70s. His subsequent band, The Hammersmith Gorillas, are less known to me but have been credited as a percursor of Pommy punk, numbering the likes of Jimmy Pursey and Billy Idol among their fans. This is a seriously rocking four-song EP from the small but impressive Rockin' House label out of Pennsylvania (the same folks who put Brother Brick's "Same" on a single.) The cover of "Summertime Blues", although well done, is a tad redundant simply because of its vast number of appearances elsewhere, but the remaining three originals show Jesse and his Crashers to be capable of laying waste to any garage. "Keep on Moving" is especially deft in the heavyhanded determination department, in a Pink Fairies sort of way. The energy levels never flag, which is why you need this 45 RPM  $3 SKU:7783

AGINCOURT- Fly Away- Label:LION   URUGUAYAN SERIESfirst official issue of this much-loved album of Moody Blues-influenced home recordings from around 1970, from the fertile minds of psychedelic-folk masters Peter Howell and John Ferdinando, but credited to their semi-fictitious group Agincourt; an intricate, dreamy psychedelic album, made all the better by the fragile female vocals on offer from Lee Menelaus; considered a bit more progressive (read: less acoustic, less fluid) than the duo’s other albums, with reasonable comparisons often made to the music of Syd Barret or Fairfield Parlour. We at Lion Productions are pleased to have had a hand at making this music available for the first time from the original master tapes! The sixteen-page booklet comes with lyrics and band history, and includes previously unseen photos of the band. The addition of two previously unheard bonus tracks makes this an essential reissue of a private pressing mega-rarity (originals are £1500 or more)! CD  $18 SKU:5893

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE-FEELS-Label:FAT CAT  Moving further away from the folkish affinities, Feels is electrified, rhythmically more urgent, & overall a denser work. ANIMAL COLLECTIVE  - Campfire Songs - Label:CATSUP PLATE  DAVID PORTNER (AVEY TARE) and NOAH LENNOX (PANDA BEAR), and DEAKEN--deliver a beautiful example of exploratory folk sounds. Recorded largely on a screened-in porch in rural Maryland, the album is a blend of strummed and plucked acoustic guitars, chanted, nearly wistful vocal harmonies, and pulsing rhythms that seem like they might break apart at any moment, and occasionally do. Simple and repetitive melodies that recall the early work of the Third Ear Band, 1970s German commune-music, and other folk-psychedelic searchers. Excellent, and beautifully packaged. CD  $15 SKU:6284

BACKHOUSE, MIRIAM- GYPSY WITHOUT A ROAD -Label:MOTHER EARTH MUSIC  IMPORT Reissue on CD by this great British acid folk album, originally released in 1977! Miriam plays guitar to accompany herself but her debut album has the addition of keyboards and bass arrangements by Brian Etheridge and Stephen Delft on dulcimer. At the end of 1979 Miriam moved to South Africa with her then new husband, musician John Erasmus. They quickly built up a solid reputation as performers, recorded several albums and featured on many television programmes. BARON QUARTET, STEVE- The Mother Of Us All - Label:FALLOUT (UK) Despite boasting enthusiastic sleevenotes from Pete Townshend of The Who ("...all the musicians are in perfect harmony, all the songs are full of life, all the sounds spontaneously and simultaneously imploding and exploding..."), this superb fusion of jazz, folk and psychedelic rock failed to connect when it first appeared in 1969. Featuring some astonishing musical interplay and searing guitar playing, as well as a handful of haunting acoustic tracks, it's a lost classic that makes its CD debut here. CD  $19 SKU:7009

BILLY BOND Y LA PESADA- Volumen 3-4 - Label:CLOUD FOREST  A wildly eclectic brew of driving heaviness, looser trippiness, and even some delicate moments from Billy Bond -- a more freewheeling and ambitious mix of post psychedelic wildness from Brazil's Billy Bond & co! Volume 3 from 1972 is made up of 2 lengthy suites, " Lado 1 -- Acustico" and "Lado 2 -- Eectrica Camplementaria". The former is surprisingly lean in spots, with some folky psychedelia in the blender. The latter is full of abrupt, dramatic stop-start dynamics. Volume 4 from '73 includes "No Nos Paran Mas", "Hacia Algun Lugar", Gracias Al Cielo", "Estamos Hartos", "Ano 1939", "Algo Esta Por Suceder" and more. This one is more of a wild and wooly rock & roll set, and a deliciously unpredictable one! CD  $19 SKU:7409

The new album possesses immense breadth, seamlessly showcasing short and classic folk-pop gems along with driving modern rock masterpieces, peaking with "Bright Lights", a seventeen-minute multi-dimensional opus that gives Pink Floyd's "Echoes" a run for its money.  CD  $17 SKU:7687

BOWIE, DAVID - Deram Antology 66  -  68 - Label:DERAM  This is a collection of singles and rare tracks recorded by David Bowie on the Deram label.Personnel includes: David Bowie (vocals).Recorded between 1966 and 1968. Includes liner notes by Mark Adams. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Prior to his transformation into the Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust or any of a half dozen personas that he's taken on throughout his career, David Bowie was just another art student struggling to make the leap to fame and fortune. THE DERAM ANTHOLOGY is a fascinating look into the early workings of a legendary artist. Bowie's mucking about for a hit included Anthony Newley-influenced numbers ("Rubber Band"), a novelty song ("The Laughing Gnome") swinging London lounge ("Love You Till Tuesday") and pale imitations of early Pink Floyd ("She's Got Medals.") Other more notable attempts to distinguish these numbers included adding lots of orchestration ("The London Boys"), weather-related sound effects ("Please Mr. Gravedigger") and kitschy banjo and clavinet arrangements ("Did You Ever Have A Dream"). After spending almost two years recording and watching his singles get roundly ignored by the public, Bowie started forming his unique style upon working with new producer Tony Visconti in late 1967 (This association would last another 13 years). Some of the earliest numbers of these sessions included the psychedelic folk of Bowie's mixed media trio Feathers on "Ching-A-Ling," the baroque grandiosity of "When I Live My Dream" and an early version of "Space Oddity," which is where it all started. PREVIEW :Mojo (2/02, p.83) - "...Bowie blended Eastern philosophy, theatricality and the persona of an Anthony Newley-voiced sophisticate into a translated eclecticism..." CD  $19 SKU:6605

CD  $14 SKU:5887

BREAD, LOVE & DREAMS- ST - Label:HUGO MONTES e first, and perhaps the dreamiest album from these famed folk/psych purveyors (Decca, 1969), who include David McNiven (he wrote all the lyrics for the amazing Human Beast "Volume One" album), and Carolyn Davis from Looking Glass; flowery yet mournful stuff—fragile and introverted songs in minor keys reminiscent of no one—and all of high quality. CD  $17 SKU:6243

BREAD, LOVE AND DREAMS- The Strange Tale of Captain Shannon and the Hunchback -Label:GIGHA Recorded simultaneously with their classic Amaryllis album and released in 1970 on the Decca label, this psychedelic folk landmark showcases the talents of Edinburgh's David McNiven and Angie Rew, with one spellbinding track from former bandmate Carolyn Davis. BRIDGET ST. JOHN- Thank You For - Label:CHERRY RED (UK) Originally released in 1972, this is Bridget St. John's third album. "Thank You For... was the closet Bridget ever got to full-fledged folk rock and was the album that should have finally established her as one of the leading singer/songwriters of her generation. The early '70s saw an explosion of solo performers armed with just a guitar or piano make their mark and 'soft rock' was the order of the day - listening now to this record and her previous ones, it remains a mystery as to why she didn't go beyond a cult following. She definitely wrote and performed material that was the equal and at time even better than that of the late Nick Drake or Sandy Denny. The third album began on an upbeat note with 'Nice' and for the first time on a Bridget record there was a delightful country undercurrent as Matthews Southern Comfort's Gordon Huntley added some very attractive pedal steel guitar." -Nigel Cross, liner-notes.  CD  $17 SKU:5860

many self-penned numbers as well as a few contemporary covers with Briggs

of singles/EPs before retiring from the music business making this reissue
an important document of the British folk revival CD  $26 SKU:6726

CONGRESO - EL CONGRESO -Label:RECORD RUNNER  reissue of the band's third album, lovely, unclassifiable music from Chile-a perfect amalgam of rock, folklore and erudition-first released in 1977 by EMI; if the first Congreso album is their spontaneous and innocent album, this one is their most advanced effort, conscientious and adult, with all the elements of their previous two albums combined to develop music that displays greater compositional complexity; there is one consistent factor in the music of Congreso, and that is the beauty of the band's melodies; includes a 10-minute bonus track very much in the same vein as the first album. CD  $20 SKU:1680

COOLEY-MUNSON- In Debt LTD 500 copies -Label:GUERSSEN RECORDS Bill Cooley and Alan Munson were two friends in Santa Barbara, California, living their early 20s writing folk-rock songs for their pleasure. That was 1972, and they decided to put these songs into the studio, self-produce the album and press a tiny quantity of 500 pieces hoping it could help getting a contract with a major company. This never happened, as you would have guessed, and sure this fact helped making their sole album, In Debt, a major collectable item in the folk-rock and psychedelic rock listeners and collectors. Today, original copies of this record fetch quite interesting sums when changing hands in record fairs or internet auctions. Being a private pressing, you can easily imagine it's not a big production, but no care. This album has the right feel and you won't need anything else to make it one of your faves. All tracks are original compositions, and the style is very personal. It's folk-rock, but many tracks are quite psychedelic too, in their own way. But don't look close for influences, they will not come to mind that easily. Bill and Alan had their own psychedelic folk-rock style, and the raw, sometimes amateurish feel that these recordings have give the album the final distinctive touch. Never reissued before in any format, now here we come with a splendid reissue, with the collaboration of the guys. Remastered sound taken from the master tapes, CD version comes with booklet and outer slimcase. Alan Munson kept going the folk-rock way and released two solo albums during the '70s too, which we are also re-releasing along with In Debt. CD  $25 SKU:7814

DAMON - Song Of A Gypsy - Label:DAILY BREAD MINISTRIES Late 1990's reissue of this US private pressing monster from the late '60s -- available again. This has been booted twice before (UK's Afterglow and on LP via the "fuck you" Fanny label out of Belgium), but this is the first legit issue, from original masters, via the resurfaced hands of Damon himself. Originally recorded in 1969 and released in some micro-quantity of non-distributed LPs, the album documents Damon's travelling-gypsy-psych concoction and will either blow you into the stratosphere with its precise period-evocations, or have you in a rage of tears. Personally, I find the exotic percussion, the lovely zap-fuzz psych guitar and the invigoratingly heart-stopping hippie-era insight of Mr. Damon's lyrical genius one of life's more rewarding small pleasures. The final track, "The Road of Life," a metaphysical battle where "some wear suits, some wear beads," caps off one of the finest philosophical acid-comedy records of all time. This record is also in Paul Major's "Top Five of Weird Underground Psych/Folk", as revealed in Vice magazine. CD  $16 SKU:5750

DANDO SHAFT - ST - Label:AKARMA High quality all acoustic folk is what we find on Dando Shaft's 1971 release. This reissue also features four bonus tracks, including the original demo for 'Spring Clog Dance', 'Lullabyl', 'Thruxton' & 'Sun Clog Dance'. Gatefold miniature LP sleeve. DE SHANNON, JACKIE - HIGH COINAGE  SONGWRITERS -Label:RAVEN COLLECTION 1960-1984). As a follow-up to the highly successful come and get me: 1958-1980, Raven presents another stunning multi-label collection of the gifted Jackie de Shannon, "High coinage: the songwriters collection 1960-1984". Although known as a popular songwriter, few performers have enjoyed a career as versatile as de Shannon. According to Richie Unterberger she is "a superb singer, capable of both sweet ballads and (more satisfyingly) a gutsy, soulfully husky delivery". This unique, multi-label collection culls tracks from early singles for the Liberty label ("Lonely girl", "Heaven is being with you") and her wonderfully creative late 60s albums for Imperial such as "Me about you(i keep wanting you, high coin) and "Laurel canyon" (laurel canyon and a cover of the bands the weight) where a delightful country-soul feel replaced the polished pop and folk-rock of her past hits. It ends with the perfectly crafted adult contemporary sound of latter-day singles, all night desire & possible dream. As well as her own compositions, this CD features songs and/or contributions from Van Morrison, Randy Newman, Bobby Womack, Warren Zevon, Jack Nitzsche, Van Dyke Parks, Carole King, Dr. John, Robbie Robertson, Burt Bacharach and Lennon & Mccartney. tracklisting: 1. FOOL - ST - Label:REV-OLA (UK) only album from anarchic eccentrics in 1960's Amsterdam and London, designers of many a psychedelic wonder, mainly known for being slagged off in every Beatles book ever written by those who weren't there; the album is a tour de force of Weird Folk ala Incredible String Band, and strange twisted visions of pop music based on who knows what! the Fool album can take it's place as a rediscovered artefact of a time when an injection of Wicker Man-ism somehow found it's way into the already twisted body of British pop; produced by Graham Nash on the cusp of leaving the Hollies (another band for whom the Fool did graphic design) and founding CSN, and engineered by Hendrix soundman Eddie Kramer." FRANKLIN, RON - ST - Label:ALIVE  As a singer-songwriter-guitarist from his adopted hometown of Memphis TN, Ron Franklin's music brings you back to the time when the urban and the rural, the folk and the blues were not far apart. With an impeccable underground pedigree which includes bands such as The Natural Kicks and The Entertainers, as well as a brief stint with Love and the late Arthur Lee, Ron's music is part of the legacy of the wellspring of Southern sound. This self-titled album is an amazing achievement, timeless and transcending generations. "Ron Franklin's heart beats to traditional American music, the kind that's as right for country nights as it is for city lights-it's a Southern thing. Down there they call him the Rambler and it's not because he's a talker: he likes to stay on the move. Like musicians on a mission before him, from Bob Dylan to the Black Keys, Franklin went in search of his musical heroes-and found them-down on Highway 61." - Crawdaddy. "Ron Franklin is a young, super talented guitar and mandolin playin singer with a lonesome but rockin' voice, knows music, especially blues and old music, writes great new songs." - Peter Case CD  $10 SKU:7685

FRIENDS- Fragile - Label:LION  The rarest, and I would dare to say best, folk/psych album from Peter Howell and John Ferdinando, musical brainchildren behind Ithaca, Agincourt, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and Tomorrow Come Someday. This fifth Howell/Ferdinando album had just been completed in or around 1974 when the partnership came to an end. Howell had been working at the BBC as a studio manager since 1970 (he'd provided a stiff upper lip voiceover for John Peels Top Gear shows), but he was now offered a position with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, which he accepted, and still holds. An album so incredibly rare (only a single acetate exists), that many have doubted the album’s existence… until now! “Friends” still has the recognizable Ithaca and/or Agincourt sound, with lead vocals mainly by Peter Howell mostly, but with all the same elements and participants, and four tracks featuring the lovely vocals of Ruth Cubbin. A pastoral psychedelic folk stroll in the sunshine, with a few tracks reminiscent of 60's soft psych. Very good!!” CD  $17 SKU:5895

GENESIS- S/T -Label:GUERSSEN This Genesis comes from Columbia, and its a shame they used such a common name, as their music is absolutely unique! Founded by Humberto Monroy (ex-Speakers) in the very early 70s, they released a bunch of lps, of which this is the second one. This same titled album, their second, was recorded in March 1974 and released by Famoso (a Codiscos sub-label). Unusual and charming sound in the folk, rock & psychedelic veins, but always with a wonderful Andinean folk feel. Most of the tracks are written by Humberto but the more famous number included on the album, which received a lot of radio airplay in Columbia at the time, was a chilling cover of "Como decirte cuanto te amo" by Cat Stevens. Also, the psychedelic sounding "Don Simon" was probably their major success.. This is the first ever reissue , and comes with a nice booklet w/linernotes and pictures, and great remastered sound.   GW PICK IMPORT CD  $22 SKU:6406

GROOP, THE- S/T -Label:SUNDAZED "The Groop's 1970 LP for Bell Records truly qualifies as a lost classic: only a handful of sealed copies, which mysteriously surfaced in the 1990s, are known to exist. With direct ties to the 5th Dimension, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, the Millennium, Sagittarius and the only X-rated film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture (Midnight Cowboy) this baroque folk-rock gem with its opulent orchestrations, breathtaking vocal harmonies and subtle flourishes of pop-psychedelia is an unforgettable snapshot of the late '60s Los Angeles scene. GROWING CONCERN, THE- ST - Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA "Although virtually nothing is known of Growing Concern, their only album (Mainstream, 1969) is an enjoyable piece of West Coast psychedelic pop. The opening track 'Hard, Hard Year' sets the tone for the album: it opens with melodic guitar work, which is joined first by bass, then by excellent keyboards; it also features beautiful female vocal harmonies from group members Bonnie MacDonald and Mary Garstki. 'Edge Of Time' features excellent lead guitar work, as does 'Tomorrow Has Been Cancelled'; 'A Boy I Once Knew Well' is a folky lament, which again features fine vocal harmonies, keyboards, and guitar work. Overall, quite a good blend of folk rock, pop, and psychedelia. The album is brilliantly recorded, and is of a consistently high musical quality. The band surely deserved a better fate than the obscurity to which they were consigned by the bizarre business practices of the Mainstream label." CD  $20 SKU:7381

GUILLOTEENS- ACTION! ACTION! ACTION!-Label:Breakaway  (2CD) They never struck the commercial success of their townmates the Gentrys or the Box Tops. HARWOOD, CHRISTINE -  NICE TO MEET MISS CHRISTINE  -Label:FINDERS KEEPERS  Chris Harwood's debut LP for Miki Dallon's obscure British Birth label was the only record she ever made. No singles were ever released and it was seldom heard beyond these shores - the making of a record collector's holy grail. Alongside the obscure Vashti Bunyan LP, Shirley Collins and Julie Covington's early solo LP, 'Nice to Meet Miss Christine' remains one of the most sought after English female folk records ever released. You just have to listen to her cover of CSN&Y's 'Wooden Ships' to realise why. HAZLEWOOD, LEE- Something Special - Label:WOODEN HILL Recorded in 1967 but shelved at the time and then only released in Germany some twenty years later, this would have been the third solo album for MGM from country music's first true idiosyncratic genius. Hazlewood's unique blend of country, pop, jazz, folk and blues can be found here but with songs that are even slightly more off-the-wall than usual, perhaps explaining the reluctance on the part of MGM to release the record. The most eccentric record from country music's legendary outsider artist. Contains liner notes." CD  $18 SKU:7125

HENSKE-FAREWELL ALDEBRAN-Label:  Reissue of late 60s folk/psych album by husband and wife. Yester had enjoyed an element of fame with THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL. "Farewell Aldebran" is often heralded as one of the most proficient and creative album in its genre, with Henskey's incredible range of vocal styles. Her mind blowing vocals on the opening track, the hard-fuzzed "Snowblind", gives an early clue to her talent and range. They attempted to scale the same artistic heights with their next collaboration ROSEBUD, it was not to be. Yester, fearing he already had peaked as a musician turned his attention to production and started working with Tom Waits, Tim Buckley, The turtles etc.  GW pick import  CD  $20 SKU:4556

HOMESTEAD & WOLFE - Our Times :The Gold Star Tapes (1973-75) -Label:ANOPHOLES Originally released in 1975, Homestead & Wolfe's lone and unknown privately pressed LP is an artifact so lost to time, it has never appeared in any discography, list of rare records, or catalog, anywhere. However, exist it does, and now their story can be told. Anopheles Records has sat tight lipped on this discovery for the last year while researching and preparing this reissue from the original master tapes and with full cooperation of the group. Homestead & Wolfe was a folk-harmony group based around the United Methodist Good Samaritan church in Cupertino, CA. Comprised of two female lead vocalists, one male lead vocalist, and buttressed with superb male and female harmonies throughout, H&W performed original material in a rich, melodic folk-rock-country style that is well executed, as well as earnest and personal. These 15 tracks were recorded at the legendary Gold Star Studios in Hollywood between 1973-75. Engineered by Stan Ross, these recordings feature top flight studio musicianship from legendary 'wrecking crew' drummer Hal Blaine, guitarist Ben Benay (Goldenrod, Darius), acoustic guitarist Al Casey, monster bass player Ray Pohlman, not to mention one of the world's most renowned and respected pedal steel guitar players, Jay Dee Maness (Buck Owens, the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo LP). The harmonies and arrangements of H&W recall both the Mamas and the Papas and the Carpenters at times, but much of the music deals with darker themes: the story of Wounded Knee told in 'See The Children Die', the organ fueled psychedelia of 'Your Freedom's In Question', aimed at the Nixon administration at the time, remains apropos today, and recalls the work of Growing Concern, Birmingham Sunday, Art of Lovin' and the Poppy Family. There are plenty of surprises here, as we located 6 unreleased tracks to augment the 9 tracks on the original album, including the startlingly great and dynamic cut, 'Beat of the Drum', which sounds as if the Bangles were hired to front Goldenrod for a one off single. The full color 16 page booklet tells the story in their own words, features images of the touring group and recording sessions at Gold Star, and maintains the high standard of archival work Anopheles Records is known for. Homestead & Wolfe represents a highly unusual and strikingly original blend of unproven but talented young vocalists, top quality session players and engineering, and a truly rare chemistry that makes this one of the great folk-rock discoveries of the last 10 years."  CD  $18 SKU:6890

INSTANT ORANGE -ST-Label:SHADOKS  Besides home to the Hells Angels, farmers and citrus grooves, San Bernardino, California was also where Instant Orange lived and released their first single in 1968. The band forged ahead and released another single (1973), album (1973) and two ten inch eps (1974 & 1975). All of their releases were small pressings of 100 copies and to this day, Instant Orange remains virtually unknown. Their homemade sound is a refreshing reflection of their west coast folk-rock influences that were so prevalent during the sixties and early seventies. All original tracks with inspiration from bands like the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Love, Sandy Bull and others. Songs full of electric and acoustic guitars with nice doses of McGuinnesque 12 string riffing as well as many unsuspecting surprises (antiquated electronic effects, rambling rural explorations, long jams, experimental moves, stoner banter and other weirdness between songs, caveman fuzz, etc). A solid listen with enough original imagination to keep it interesting without the band creating an identity crisis by trying too hard to be something else than themselves. Hear it all on this limited double album, but grab it before it becomes elusive like some of San Bernardino's motorcycle riding inhabitants. Jewel case with 16 page booklet. CD  $27 SKU:7094

ITHACA- Game For All Who Know - Label:LION  URUGUAYAN SERIES- incredibly good and extremely rare home recordings from the saHeaded by psychedelic-folk masters Peter Howell and John Ferdinando, that had made the AGINCOURT album two years earlier. The album opens with the sound of pages turning, and more or less follows a journey through a cycle of questions, times, feelings, and dreams; a slightly different emphasis this time, as the band sounds more like a folk version of Pink Floyd. Beautiful interwoven songs with nice tape experiments of added sounds made all the better by the fragile female vocals on offer from Lee Menelaus. We at Lion Productions are pleased to have had a hand at making this music available for the first time from the original master tapes! The addition of three previously unreleased bonus tracks is cause for much rejoicing! The sixteen-page booklet has lengthy band history, lyrics, and rare photos. A beautiful, trippy album with lovely female vocals sounding glorious in a dreamy setting. CD  $18 SKU:5894

JADE- FLY ON STRANGE WINGS digipack - Label: LIGHTNING TREE Ltd ed of 2000 Jade was one of the most popular UK folk/rock bands of the early 1970s evolving from folk duo Marianne Segal and Dave Waite (see their Paper Flowers album Light Flash CD 002) Under the guidance of producer Jon Miller the duo became Jade, with the addition of keyboardist/bassist and arranger Rod Edwards. In 1970 they recorded their sole album and singles with a the help of a glittering array of talent including Pete Sears (Les Fleur De Lys, Sam Gopal's Dream, Jefferson Starship) John Wetton (King Crimson, Family) Terry Cox (Pentangle) Jimmy Litherland (Colosseum) Michael Rosen (Eclection, Fotheringay) Clem Cattini (Rumplestiltskin, The Ivy League) Pete York (Spencer Davis Group, Hardin and York) and Mick Waller (Rod Stewart). Fly On Strangewings was released in 1970 and it received rave reviews and comparisons to Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention. Now over 30 years later, Jade's sole album is regarded as one of the best albums of the '70's UK folk rock movement. and it ranks along with The Tree's On The Shore and Mellow Candle's Swaddling Songs as one of the great underground albums of the era. MOJO magazine voted it as one of the top ten UK folk rock albums of the '70s along with Fairport Convention's Leige and Leaf. Now at last it is widely available to be afforded the classic status it deserves. Lightning Tree Records are proud to announce the deluxe edition of Jade's Fly On Strangewings with the addition of three previously unreleased bonus tracks and U.S. radio adverts." CD  $20 SKU:6230

JADE- DAVE WAITE and MARIANNE SEGAL- Paper Flowers  -  Label:Lightning Tree  Whilst searching Marianne's archives for the re-issue of Jade's "Fly On Strangewings" album, a whole batch of tapes were uncovered that contained recordings by Dave and Marianne recorded in 1967 and 1969, just prior to forming legendary '70's UK folk rock band Jade. Further searching revealed three fully arranged and orchestrated tracks in the vaults of Jade producer Jon Miller. These tapes, released here as "Paper Flowers", reveal one of the great lost UK folk albums of the 1960's-comparable to Sandy Denny and the Strawbs. "Paper Flowers" is a rare acoustic snapshot of an era known more for it's volume and wild theatrics than for it's gentle rustic melodies-it's the sound of summer days in Hampstead, where the beautiful people wore beautiful clothes, and the world was one of incense, innocence and heavy doses of mystery. Fans of '60's psychedelia, pop or folk will find much to enjoy on this release. Remastered from the only surviving tapes, with fully detailed sleeve notes by Dave and Marian as well as contemporary photographs. CD  $19 SKU:5878

KILROY, PAT - Light Of Day - Label:FALLOUT  This highly original 1966 collection has been called the first acid folk record of all time. KINKS- Something Else By JPN IMPORT -Label:BMG Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2007.  Having closed out their hard-rock period, the Kinks went pastoral on SOMETHING ELSE. It's an album of folk and pop songs about the quiet pleasures of family life and the English countryside, dotted with harpsichords, acoustic guitars, and ethereal harmonies. A radical rejection of the Age of Aquarius, it was one of the boldest pop albums of its time, a commercial failure but an artistic landmark. In "Two Sisters," Ray Davies sings about a wild, swinging woman and her homemaking sister, and dares to side with the latter. Other songs include "Afternoon Tea," surely the first rock song ever written on that subject, and the majestic "Waterloo Sunset," which has been described as the most beautiful song ever written in the English language. PREVIEW :Rolling Stone (9/14/00, p.180) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...An eccentric brand of rock & roll that had far more to do with Thomas Hardy than Chuck Berry....The arrangements are quieter and occasionally employ keyboard and strings....The album's gem is its concluding track, 'Waterloo Sunset'..."Mojo (9/03, p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...SOMETHING ELSE, originally released in 1967, was the anti-PEPPER..." KORAY,ERKIN - Elektronic Turkuler -Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea)  terrific heavy Eastern raves and drones from Turkey's legendary freaked-out psychedelic guitar guru; fantastic sound quality on an album that basically collected some of Koray's best singles tracks up to the date of its original release by Dogan Plakcilik in 1974—the result? some of Koray's most extended tracks. The sound that first emerges as “Elektronik Türküler” begins is that of the plucked strings of the baglama, a sound both sensuous and languid; then comes another undulating rhythm, Koray’s instrumental, ‘Sir” (Secret), with his lead baglama book-ending a stinging psychedelic guitar solo. The mood changes with the next track, ‘Hele Yar’, an acoustic re-arrangement of a Turkish ballad from the 17th Century; here, twin baglamas construct a dance rhythm behind lilting bass and scant drums. Side two of the original LP opens with the acoustic guitar-led love ballad, ‘Cemalim’ (My Cemal); this well known Anatolian folk number is well handled here with Koray’s stridently strummed acoustic guitar battling throughout against overdubbed electric guitar—background vocals waft softly in the background, echoing Koray’s hypnotic repetition of the title, accompanied by highly controlled fuzz guitar filigrees. The last track is the nine-minute odyssey that is ‘Türkü’ (Ballad): the swirling kalem, that Turkish double-reed wind instrument of snake charming tendencies, weaves a truly psychedelic arabesque against a foundation of solid bass and drums; the voice of Koray emerges from the shadows drenched in reverb, slowly reciting words of great import, intoned over and over again as if in consecration of a ceremonial rite; the pace quickens to a Dervish whirl, until a smash of glass breaks the tension... and we begin again, with Koray’s guitar and trance-like recitation carrying us further and further back into time, each word fading farther and farther into ancestral echo-land where east is west and west is east... and we are all together. A densely textured psychedelic masterpiece... mesmerizing.  CD  $20 SKU:6277

However, "Earth, Spirit, and Sky" finds the Lamp of the Universe shining brightly in a more heartfelt, song-oriented, and stripped back effort. LAMP OF THE UNIVERSE- FROM THE MYSTIC RAYS OF- Label:ASTRAL PROJECTI Great follow up to the 'Earth, Spirit & Sky' album. A more 70's cosmic psychedelic jam. Lamp Of the Universe is the solo project from Datura Bassist and vocalist Craig Williamson. It is a formidable modern mix of pysch "raga" folk with spacey rock elements. In its great variety the music offers astonishing acoustic guitar parts, exotic sitar "raga" scales, "tabla" percussions and "acid" heavy, bluesy rock guitars. Minimal "drone" bass lines alternate with fuzzy, sometimes aggressive psychedelic waves. This rather "cosmic" musical ensemble is without moderation a nice discover. LEOPOLD, PERRY - CHRISTIAN LUCIFER - Label:GEAR FAB  Long lost LP from the father of Acid Folk. '...a masterpiece ... one of the most artistic, intellectually mature, and haunting albums of its era.' -- All Music Guide
Review :Although his incredibly rare first album, Experiment in Metaphysics, was a sensational and dynamic slice of progressive acid folk, Perry Leopold took a phenomenal leap forward on the follow-up, 1973's Christian Lucifer. (It is a small miracle that the recording ever saw the light of day, since the studio at which it was recorded was sold and then closed, and all the master tapes from the sessions were erased and used again, leaving only a few mixdown copies.) The songs on the first album, while all strong individually, didn't quite hold together, but Christian Lucifer is conceptually a whole, impossible to imagine as anything other than what it is. Leopold's melodies again shine like slowly uncovered gems. Complex melodic lines and protracted vocal melodies stretch and build ominously, like the sight of a wise, enigmatic monk concealed beneath a woolen cloak. The religious reference is not an empty simile. If the songs on his first album came across as parables or ancient narrative tales, then Christian Lucifer is a collection of hymns, prayers, and litanies conflicted with the dualities of life, full of metaphysical depth. Whereas the first album stuck to the folk basics, this second album was stunningly produced. Gorgeous layers of acoustic guitars, bass, clavinets, bassoons, recorders, oboes, cellos, tabla, MiniMoog, and explosive timpani and bells gave the album a rococo-styled grace and wispy beauty, invoking everything from medieval madrigals to Bach and Vivaldi to Middle Eastern musics to psychedelia and the Doors. And yet, it is none of those things. There are imprecise similarities to Nick Drake's oppressive but beautiful fragility, the theatrical majesty and scope of David Bowie (who is quoted at the beginning of "Serpentine Lane," a dystopian reply of sorts to "Space Oddity," with Leopold's deep voice infusing the music with the same alien quality), and the visionary mystical musings of Merrell Fankhauser and Jeff Cotton's cult band Mu. The foreboding keyboards of "The Windmill" are pulled directly from "Riders on the Storm," but the album is an entirely unique and novel amalgam. There is a Renaissance Fair feel, particularly in songs such as "Sunday Afternoon in the Garden of Delights" and "The Starewell," harsh and pretty at once, and intriguingly arcane. Leopold was, in fact, a troubadour in the truest sense of the word, singing his music for whoever would listen. Ultimately, the album is a very individual struggle with the duality that lies at its heart and is the crux of everything humanity is and does. Christian Lucifer is both terrestrial and ethereal, both tangible and transcendent. It is unquestionably Leopold's masterpiece, and one of the most artistic, intellectually mature, and haunting albums -- released or not -- of its era. ~ Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide CD  $16 SKU:5848
